I love this series but Bujold has and always has had a... really weird approach to sex and sexuality when it comes to Aral, IMO. " The most aggressively heterosexual portrayal of bisexuality" is a good way to describe it. 99% of what we know about Aral's sexuality comes from Cordelia and we're informed several times that yeah, he's bisexual. It's hinted that he had a bisexual relationship with the sadist Ges Vorrutyer, who tortures and nearly rapes Cordelia. Like... wow. We never see this relationship. Then in this book, we're told that oh yeah, they've been a poly threesome for years? Only there was never any hint of that in previous books either and it feels very much like an asspull.

This is all an example of characterization via being told by another character vs. being an actual part of the plot, which is one of the issues I have with her work.
