It's my belief that Pokemon and Sonic share a lot of the same problems and cycles.

Both as franchises AND as fandoms.

The only difference is, Pokemon backlash hasn't yet become memetic.

What would you say their problems are?

The persistent rotating out of ideas and gimmicks in an effort to find something that's universally well recieved.

A heavy focus on the first two games in terms of promotional push, to the detriment of said new ideas.

Fans that echo that tunnel-vision focus for 'gen one' and dismiss the current for problems the old ones had as well.

Older fans demanding that the games develop a maturer tone and lessen accessibility to younger audiences so they don't feel ashamed to share space with them. (Sonic has less of the latter, admittedly.)

Anime adaptations that lose their charm after a while.

Spinoffs that sometimes work and really take off (PMD, Sonic Riders) and sometimes really don't (Sonic Chronicles, Pokemon Masters).

There are problems unique to both franchises, of course, but those are the big ones.
