Wearing shoes inside your home. Who ever thought this was an okay thing to do.

Who does this?!

Me! My family do and I can't train them out of it so the floor is always gross and I can't go barefoot without getting dirty feet.

Plenty of people do!

It's so weird to me when people do that. Like... this is your house? Why would you want to wear shoes inside your house? That doesn't sound comfortable at all. I prefer going barefoot in warm weather and in cold weather it's socks and slippers. That way I'm not tracking in a bunch of outside dirt.

Non-inflammatory question, but do you live somewhere with no seasons? (and by this I mean like, no dramatic season shifts, ie heavy snows etc).

Because I find not wearing shoes inside (in America anyway) doesn't really happen in places where wearing things inside would track in snow, slush, mud, etc.

I keep trying to train myself out of wearing shoes in the house (or good shoes to garden, sigh) and have never managed it. I grew up with a yard that was 95% concrete and only moved to a place with actual dirt in my teens, and up into my 20s we had a wooden deck in the back yard and a concrete front stoop, so dirt in the house was never a huge problem.

I know most people who take their shoes off inside grew up doing it, but aside from putting mats outside and just inside the door(s) and keeping my shoes on them, does anyone have any tips for someone who’d like to stop tracking dirt in my house?

Put slippers by the door and swap as soon as you get in.

AYRT—I don’t own any slippers. I’ve tried having sandals I only wear indoors, but when I’m in and out of the house six times in an hour, I get frustrated or forgetful and give up.

I usually take them off in winter when I would track in snow, but not so much in summer. Also, in summer I wear sandals and my feet can get dirty even in sandals, so I take my shoes off and I'm still tracking in dirt until I can get to the bathroom to wash off my feet. Also, sometimes it's just not convenient to take my shoes off right away, so I don't. My floors are highly cleanable and I don't see what's so bad about just cleaning the floor. They will accumulate dust and spills in the kitchen and so forth, anyway. You can't keep your feet clean through taking your shoes off alone.

Some of us have to. I was ordered to by my podiatrist. I am not allowed to be barefoot or wear flat anything unless I'm in my bed or have my feet up, and I'm not supposed to wear flat shoes out of the house either. Has to do with the fact that I have unusually high arches. I currently have an injury as a result of the fact that I never wore shoes indoors and always used to wear flats.

I grew up wearing shoes inside. We were always in and out of the house and had a bunch of animals and so no matter how often we cleaned (and we cleaned a lot) there was always stuff on the floor. It was cleaner to keep shoes on.

Now that I'm on my own, I take my shoes off, but I still wear socks from the moment I get out of bed to the moment I get back in it, even in the summer. (Unless I'm in the shower.) I can't stand having bare feet.

I wear shoes inside because usually when I come home I'm carrying stuff (bag, groceries, whatever), and stopping to put everything down, get out of my shoes, and pick it all up is a pain.

I just unload, go hang up my bag and plug in my phone, then go change and put on slippers (cold floors and cold feet).

I only sit around in outside shoes if i know i'm going right back out or taking a break from yardwork or something.

I hate wearing shoes indoors, so I’m barefoot at home. My family wears shoes inside, but they switch their outside shoes for sandals or slippers.

I don't like wearing shoes around the house because I think socks and slippers are more comfortable, but I think the taboo of wearing shoes inside because it's ~dirty~ is irrational. I'll wear my shoes into the house and not take them off until I get to my room, none of this taking them off at the door because it'll sully the pure, sparklingly dirt-free indoor carpeting. It doesn't. I wore shoes in the house all the time when I was a child and we were fine.

People also though eating their own shit was fine, but then came the plague.

Yes, this. It's so dirty.
