People tend to have strong feelings when something is *different from what they expected*. And in fandom, where strong feelings are kind of the norm, that can get really loud.

Except...

We don't always recognise *why* we're having feelings. (I spent all yesterday spectacularly grumpy and broody and eventually realised that my allergies were playing up and the reduced oxygen was making me anxious. Except for most of that day I was brooding over past slights and things which have made me angry in the past, not fixing the allergy problem. I had misidentified the reason why I was anxious.)

So if someone is anxious and angry about the New LI, they don't always identify it as *someone new* and *not what I expected*, they just start looking for reasons in the character, and kind of... developing canonical quirks into Just The Worst. And then they have a reason to be angry, and they stop thinking and just trash the character.

I agree, it is very frustrating to watch from the outside. It is human, though.

Tell me about it. There's a regular user here who says bone headed things or misreads a secret and gets all snippy, then blames their migraine or back pain when someone calls them on it.

This would stand to reason if people haven't been hating on characters for getting in the way of their preferred ships for ages now. A roundabout psychology lesson isn't always the answer.

i mean... people have also been using their media as an outlet for their feelings for ages??? If your life is crazy or out of control and your escape mechanism fails you, you often lash out??? That is a thing that people have been doing for ages???? I am so confused by your comment

nah, it's just people being mad and bitter their ship won't happen, there is no deeper reasoning to it and i'm not going to sit here and let someone make a 'but some ppl character-hate, to cope????' argument because it's bad and you should feel bad.

just be less annoying about your disappointment, jeeze.

1. That's not really what they're doing, and 2. You're not "letting" ayrt do anything; ayrt doesn't need your permission.

because it's bad and you should feel bad.

Woooow. I might've thought you both had valid points until you went into full-on rude, unreasonable jerk mode.

If you weren't being let down in another area of your life, I bet you'd be less of an asshole to strangers
