Ohhhhhh my God I totally agree, I feel like I don't even know what show people are watching half the time!

+1

I’ve had non-canon ships where I think the canon LI is sweet and my fellow shippers trashing them makes me cringe, and I’ve seen canon LIs that were so bad I started shipping non-canon ships because only fans of those ships hated the canon LIs as much as I fucking loathed them, so I can see both sides.

I feel this pretty hard, some fanon ship fandoms I've been in have been fine about this, but others have... not. It's especially boggling when I've gotten into a show late but delved into the fandom while I'm watching to see shit tons of posts about how awful, bitchy, terrible a canon love interest is... only to get to when they enter the show and they're really sweet or fun.

It's like stepping into a bizarro land where they all watched a show you didn't.

Yeah, I agree... For the most part. There have been exceptions where I really couldn't stand the canon LI, and in one particular case it wasn't even a fandom where I actively shipped the other character with someone else. I just really hated the romance and couldn't stand the canon LI. And still, the bashing the character got from shippers went a bit overboard. Like, the character was annoying enough on their own, no need to go so OTT in your fic.

I'm usually the same way! The only time I wasn't was when House and Cuddy became canon. I was a multi-shipper and always liked that ship but when it became canon it was just awful. And the whole fandom (which was already kinda going to shit) went crazy stupid. The Huddy shippers became the most obnoxious people and all the other shippers turned into rabid dogs. It just sucked all around and killed off any interest I'd had left for the show.

Hmm.

I don't think there are many legitimately terrible canon love interests. I mean, there are plenty of shows where everyone is terrible or ones where the characters are terrible for each other, rather than one being really terrible.

I do get that character-bashing can be cathartic, but I would rather characters just face consequences for their terrible actions (and honestly, I feel like there is a lot to work with here) than they be made into caricatures of themselves. Though, I will admit that sometimes, it is really satisfying when a character I don't like is vilified, but it's actually not usually a love interest.

People tend to have strong feelings when something is *different from what they expected*. And in fandom, where strong feelings are kind of the norm, that can get really loud.

Except...

We don't always recognise *why* we're having feelings. (I spent all yesterday spectacularly grumpy and broody and eventually realised that my allergies were playing up and the reduced oxygen was making me anxious. Except for most of that day I was brooding over past slights and things which have made me angry in the past, not fixing the allergy problem. I had misidentified the reason why I was anxious.)

So if someone is anxious and angry about the New LI, they don't always identify it as *someone new* and *not what I expected*, they just start looking for reasons in the character, and kind of... developing canonical quirks into Just The Worst. And then they have a reason to be angry, and they stop thinking and just trash the character.

I agree, it is very frustrating to watch from the outside. It is human, though.

Tell me about it. There's a regular user here who says bone headed things or misreads a secret and gets all snippy, then blames their migraine or back pain when someone calls them on it.

This would stand to reason if people haven't been hating on characters for getting in the way of their preferred ships for ages now. A roundabout psychology lesson isn't always the answer.

i mean... people have also been using their media as an outlet for their feelings for ages??? If your life is crazy or out of control and your escape mechanism fails you, you often lash out??? That is a thing that people have been doing for ages???? I am so confused by your comment

(Anonymous) 2019-10-14 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
nah, it's just people being mad and bitter their ship won't happen, there is no deeper reasoning to it and i'm not going to sit here and let someone make a 'but some ppl character-hate, to cope????' argument because it's bad and you should feel bad.

just be less annoying about your disappointment, jeeze.

i'm not going to sit here and let someone make a 'but some ppl character-hate, to cope????' argument

1. That's not really what they're doing, and 2. You're not "letting" ayrt do anything; ayrt doesn't need your permission.

because it's bad and you should feel bad.

Woooow. I might've thought you both had valid points until you went into full-on rude, unreasonable jerk mode.

If you weren't being let down in another area of your life, I bet you'd be less of an asshole to strangers

(Anonymous) 2019-10-14 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Ignoring the canon bit because I don't want to open that can of worms, I know this pain as a Cloud/Aerith shipper in the ff7 fandom who doesn't think Tifa is a lying, selfish, bulling, manipulative slut with no actual purpose in the game lmao.
