I think most people just use the stove or microwave to heat water. I have a stovetop kettle and a microwave, so an electric kettle would be redundant. (I actually had an electric one that someone gave me when I went off to college but it turned out they weren't allowed in the dorms so I couldn't bring it. I used the permitted microwave instead. Ever since, I've had both a stove and a microwave where I've lived and eventually gave the kettle away, unused.)

My house has a small kitchen with limited counter space. I have a four-burner stove and rarely use all four at once, so I keep a stovetop kettle on it. However, I can't spare the counter space for an appliance that doesn't do anything the microwave or stovetop kettle cannot. There just isn't room.
