The first time I heard Americans don't have kettles in their kitchens, I was gobsmacked. Like, to me the kettle is the quintessential kitchen item along with a stove. In the UK, when you move house, literally the FIRST thing unpacked is the kettle. For ages while we did our house up the entire kitchen was bare except for one paint-spattered kettle on the side. How do you live without a kettle!?

Well, most people have either a microwave where they heat up individual cups of hot water, or a coffee maker, or the type of kettle you put on the stove and heat.

The 'plug in/turn on/instant hot water' type of kettle popular in the UK isn't much known here, but its not like people here don't have *something* that does the same thing.

US person here. They do sell electric kettles in the stores. I'd always buy one from Target for work because the water heater/cooler didn't heat the water to boiling temp and I didn't want to use the microwave for tea.

I think most people just use the stove or microwave to heat water. I have a stovetop kettle and a microwave, so an electric kettle would be redundant. (I actually had an electric one that someone gave me when I went off to college but it turned out they weren't allowed in the dorms so I couldn't bring it. I used the permitted microwave instead. Ever since, I've had both a stove and a microwave where I've lived and eventually gave the kettle away, unused.)

My house has a small kitchen with limited counter space. I have a four-burner stove and rarely use all four at once, so I keep a stovetop kettle on it. However, I can't spare the counter space for an appliance that doesn't do anything the microwave or stovetop kettle cannot. There just isn't room.

You put the water in a saucepan and put the saucepan on the stove.
