Justifiability

(Anonymous) 2019-10-15 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
So today I saw that someone had dropped a note on my desk with the word "smile" on it.

Is stabbing justified?

(Actually, I'll probably just ignore it because if it's for real, then it's rather sad that someone is so bothered by the fact that I don't smile enough for their liking that they leave lame notes on my desk.)

just ignore their passive aggressive bullshit.

Oh, I'm just going to leave the note there and act it's not even on my radar. It'll be interesting if someone else sees it and asks me what it's all about, though. I'm sure I'll just pretend not to know what it means.

Really annoying. They might've meant to cheer you up rather than command you to put on a happier expression but honestly, people are so clueless. If I wanted to cheer up a coworker, I'd give them a genuine compliment or do something nice for them, not just tell them to look happy.

I mean, the thought it was more benign crossed my mind. But even if it is well-meaning, it's definitely unwanted. But I'm just going to pretend like I didn't see it.

I know everyone is sort of against 'teaching moments' (and some groups for good reason), but personally, if you know who it is, use it as a teaching moment. Assume they meant well and were trying to cheer you up and lead with that, but explain the issues behind basically commanding someone to smile.

If they're an idiot in response or continue to do it... then stab them.

No idea who it is. But even if I did... in the end, I think the act says more about them than it does about me, which makes it bother me a whole lot less.

If you know who it is, put it back on their desk.

Get a voodoo doll, tape the note where the doll's mouth should be, and then jam a pin through its head. Keep the doll on your desk.

Well, it is Halloween, so it'll be a few weeks before they start asking questions...

Every once in a while, check to see if anyone's watching you. If they are, jam the pin into the doll a little further, and smile.

I’ve got a shovel and a tarp. Let’s do this.

Much appreciated, but you'll have to save it for now. I don't even know who it was.

Re: Justifiability

(Anonymous) 2019-10-16 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
It might have been one of those "drive-by" mood lifters, people trying to put more love in the world. Unless you never smile at work/school- then I'd take it personally. ;)

Re: Justifiability

(Anonymous) 2019-10-16 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
It could have been. I tend not to smile a lot because I'm always staring at a screen and concentrating on something. Weirdly, I smile at and say hi to people who pass by in the hall. So... idk.

Re: Justifiability

(Anonymous) 2019-10-16 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
So someone left you a note with the word 'smile' on it, nothing else? And you're this offended by it? Not everything has to be vindictive or ill-meaning, they might have actually been trying to do something nice.
Best response is to give a little smile (doesn't have to be real) and put it in your desk, so if someone's watching and trying to be an asshole (which I doubt, since it only says 'smile', 'smile more', or something of that kind would be the more obvious choice) it just puts them in the more uncomfortable position, and if they're being genuine it might even make their day. Kill 'em with kindness, I guess.

Oh yeah totally justifiable to commit violence against someone trying to spread joy. I mean, what a fucking monster!

Threads like this are what makes me think FS Anti isn't as delusional as some say.

Stabbing is 100 % justified, homfg. I loathe that shite.
I would make a point to not smile at all, even a tiny bit, EVEN MORE for like- the rest of the month.
