I try to do it at least once a year, because my blood type is a little rare-- I'm B-.

However: I feel weird about it. I'm a gay woman, and I absolutely fucking hate that I'm allowed to donate and my best friend-- a gay man-- is not allowed to because he's in a committed relationship of ten years with another man and *gasp* they have sex sometimes. It doesn't matter if they get STD screening before and it shows clean, if they had sex within a year they're rejected. I hate it. And I'm torn because I loathe supporting that bigoted nonsense, but I also feel obligated to donate because I'm in good health and my blood type is rare.

That's dumb. It seems like a leftover from the "AIDS scare" of the 80s that never got thrown away.

that is exactly what it is. and it's stupid. (they are supposed to test all blood anyway)
