I think people have a right to feel disappointed. I'm not sure how separating the source and adaptation applies to that, unless people are getting so upset that they can't bear to enjoy the source material anymore.

Also, an adaptation can be simultaneously bad as a standalone piece of work and bad as an adaptation of the source. Yeah, people are going to disagree on what counts as "living up to the source material" but that doesn't mean its impossible to adapt something badly. It may not be personal, but it can be due to all kinds of things like studio executive meddling over what is considered marketable and whatnot, as opposed to the screenwriters just having a different interpretation than you.
