I would likely use 'as' in that situation, though I might use 'for' if I wanted to give my writing a particular type of style, like something set in the Regency or if a character was telling a fairy tale or something.

I'm with you on the 'man' thing, and same for 'woman' for someone in their teens.

This is true. I'm completely fine with 'for' being used as a conjunction in instances like this, where the writing isn't supposed to sound like a normal, modern narrative.
