I might use 'for' if I wanted to give my writing a particular type of style, like something set in the Regency or if a character was telling a fairy tale or something.

This is true. I'm completely fine with 'for' being used as a conjunction in instances like this, where the writing isn't supposed to sound like a normal, modern narrative.
