Death as the villain is definitely the antithesis of how PTerry wrote him. Having said that, I don’t think that was conveyed in the recent TV series AT ALL.

Shame really. Terry Pratchett's death is one of the greatest characters in Discworld.

One part of the reason I would never point this out in a review or anything is that there is no way of knowing this unless you've READ both Discworld and Good Omens, and not even really then. The only reason I assume they're the same is because GO!Death comes across as fairly similar to DW!Death in personality, and because their voice has the same visual characteristic.

GO!Death is almost certainly meant to be more or less the same as DW!Death, but it's never said for sure. I know better than to expect people new to the fandom to know that Death is, well, Death. It still ruined the otherwise fine fic to have him be cruel and vindictive.

Good Omens was written in 1989, after Mort but before Reaper Man. Discworld Death's characterization wasn't yet all the way there, though he was no longer the antagonist he was in The Colour of Magic. Also, even going by the book, GO Death and Discwold Death aren't the same character, even though GO Death has Pratchett's fingerprints all over him and is clearly meant to be familiar to Pratchett fans. GO Death is far more neutral than his Discworld counterpart. Making GO Death a villain is still not IC, because he is not a malicious entity, but neither is the kind of character who would adopt a human child on a whim. I doubt he even has an opinion on cats.
