(Anonymous) 2019-10-26 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)ok, shortest possible rundown:
> one week's challenge is to create a televangelist parody, in which each of two teams picked a diva to worship (mercedes was on team britney)
> mercedes is cast as a "nonbeliever" who gets "concerted"
> while getting ready for the mainstage runway, mercedes talks about how she liked the role and thought she could convey it well, because she's never been to church before
> akeria (another black queen) is confused, and asks her about it
> silky (also black) points out that mercedes is muslim
> confusion from akeria
> this was somewhat ignorant, but it's also clear that it's a terminology issue on akeria's end - the classic church = christian, and mosque = muslim, but "muslim church" isn't a Thing
> silky asks how mercedes worships allah
> here, mercedes exits, and the conversation ends with her not wanting to talk about it (which the other queens, from what the viewers see, accept – overall, it's a pretty short moment)
the following week, after a politically themed challenge:
> nina, an older queen, talks about receiving threats as an openly gay student on a conservative college campus around the time of the matthew shephard murder, and how it is one of the reasons why she's a political activist to this day
> in her private interview, mercedes says that this resonates with her a lot, as she's deeply afraid of receiving hate over being muslim after this happened to her in the past
> likewise, she talks about being proud to be a drag queen AND a muslim on rpdr
> she takes the queens from last week's conversation aside, they talk about this, she apologises for walking away the week before and explains herself
> the other queens obviously say it's okay (with yvie, also black, encouraging her to be proud as there's kids watching who might need to see a queen like mercedes)
> scarlet points out that if anything, all the queens in the werkroom should apologise for not making mercedes feel safe to speak about these issues (which, y'know, good point and all, but i don't think it's the other queens in the room mercedes worried about as much as she did about the millions watching at home)
would i say everyone handled it perfectly? no. would i agree there's some level of ignorance at plat? yes. would i say it's racist bullying and harassment? also no.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-27 01:28 am (UTC)(link)In the Brittney Spears challenge they put her in that role with comments like, "We don't have Brittney Spears we only have 'Spears'" mocking her because she's both originally from Africa (Kenya) and doesn't know pop culture. They continued to talk over her and telling her she was going to play that role when Nina was actually trying to ask "are you sure you're okay with this?" They make plenty of suggestions of that type, and while I can't find a transcript, I'm fairly certain they called her a savage.
Mercedes eventually agreed, but wasn't exactly given a choice/she later states that she just wants the other Queens to like her. (and not think she's a terrorist)
They is a difference between being curious and being purposefully obtuse in the effort to hurt someones feelings, and they weren't asking, they were insulting her and her faith. Mercedes makes it perfectly clear on multiple occasions that she is uncomfortable with talking about her faith, doesn't want to, and really she has every right not to.
And there is no reason the other Queens being black should have any weight on wether or not they're being racist or phobic, it doesn't work that way. Asking, "What's an Allah anyways?" is meant to be offensive, not inquisitive.
Yes, I'm still angry about this.
