Actually no, that's not how it happened.
In the Brittney Spears challenge they put her in that role with comments like, "We don't have Brittney Spears we only have 'Spears'" mocking her because she's both originally from Africa (Kenya) and doesn't know pop culture. They continued to talk over her and telling her she was going to play that role when Nina was actually trying to ask "are you sure you're okay with this?" They make plenty of suggestions of that type, and while I can't find a transcript, I'm fairly certain they called her a savage.
Mercedes eventually agreed, but wasn't exactly given a choice/she later states that she just wants the other Queens to like her. (and not think she's a terrorist)
They is a difference between being curious and being purposefully obtuse in the effort to hurt someones feelings, and they weren't asking, they were insulting her and her faith. Mercedes makes it perfectly clear on multiple occasions that she is uncomfortable with talking about her faith, doesn't want to, and really she has every right not to.
And there is no reason the other Queens being black should have any weight on wether or not they're being racist or phobic, it doesn't work that way. Asking, "What's an Allah anyways?" is meant to be offensive, not inquisitive.
Yes, I'm still angry about this.

I trust you're as angry about literally every other catty/offensive thing that any queen has said on every season of this show

Like, if you're easily offended you really shouldn't be watching drag queens, at all, ever

I bet you were just as confused as to why people were offended by the 14 words joke too.

I'm not confused? I 100% understand why people are offended, I just don't agree with bothering to be so. Drag queens are vulgar, obscene, and say shocking/offensive things. That has literally always been their schtick.

None of you would have survived Divine existing, I swear.

Straights, demonizing gay culture is cool as long as you're white-knighting at the same time!

Being racist and misogynistic is gay culture, news at eleven!

God forbid someone ever be offended or shocked when someone says something that's offensive or shocking.
