NAYRT but you know there's a big difference between "roleplaying dark shit" and "roleplaying dark shit for the lulz" right?

they just fuckin said they'd only encountered people doing it for the lulz
how the fuck is someone supposed to know about all these good and virtuous roleplayers who are only being 'Knife Face the Rape Lord' two nights a week because ART if they've never actually met one

holy shit I just about lost my goddamned mind at Knife Face the Rape Lord lmaooooo

I really, really want to play a campaign with this character now and I know that makes me exactly the kind of person OP hates but jfc Knife Face the Rape Lord

That said, though, OP! While not a one-to-one replica of the “real deal”, there are definitely online groups who play DnD together just fine, and there are definitely some that would take a harder stance against “for the lulz” shit like that. And some that do lighter stories in general so you’d run into less “badness” all-around. It’s still pretty fun!

by employing critical thought for three seconds?

There's countless easily accessible liveplay tabletop groups these days, both for watching and joining. If OP isn't even AWARE of other player styles, that says more about their blinders than their right to judgement.
