I tend to think well of Orson Welles and Laurence Fishburne, and I don't think Ben Affleck is too bad, all of whom have written, directed, and starred in movies about some pretty terrible people.

And I think treating people badly outside a role is a bad thing for any actor and doesn't have much to do with the role, but rather, the person and their own choices - Daniel Day Lewis has treated people poorly in service to method acting for both good characters and bad and I judge him for that, not the characters he's played.
