Re: Inspired by 10: Do you believe in "Your Kink Is Not My Kink"?

Yes. I also believe that fiction is fiction and that as long as it doesn't impact real life, people can enjoy what they want in fiction. I think we can talk about how some things impact the popularity of something, like sexism impacting the popularity of maledom vs. femdom, but not what an individual person likes.

It does impact real life. I grew up without any positive LGBTQ role models. That sucked. Our renaissance of LGBTQ-inclusive media is amazing, and it's uncontroversial to say that matters.

But if I were to say that straight people who get their ideas about bisexuality from porn end up creepy and insensitive at best or actively abusive at worst? Well, "YKINMK" and that's the end of that discussion.

Bullshit like "fiction is fiction" really is a pretty gross devolution of what the sex positive movement was really about. Fiction can be built around bad ideas that contribute to bad real life relationships, and one of the goals of sex positive feminism was to build better fiction around better ideas and better relationships. No fiction is above analysis and critique, whether we're talking about the Turner Diaries or "stepsister" vids.

SA: A sensible middle ground between banning objectionable porn (or using it as an excuse for cliquish harassment) and sticking our heads in the sand with "fiction is fiction" is to treat porn with the same kinds of critical tools that we use regarding non-pornographic media.

DA - I very much agree with this.

And I think analyzing wider trends is okay. But analyzing an individual person's kinks is not. And I personally believe that people can read what they want and have what kinks they want. I do believe that on the individual level, fiction is fiction.

I'm not going to run around, collect receipts, and publicly shame people for their kinks.

But IRL, I reserve the right to keep some healthy distance from straight people who overshare about how my gender and sexual identity is such a turn-on for them.

Not exactly sure what you mean, but that sounds like it might be a real life impact of the fiction, in which case I would say there is a problem because that's the line for me. Fiction is fine if it stays fiction, but keep it out of real life.
