well-made propaganda is still propaganda

^ This. I don't really want to sit through an entire movie of what sounds like incredibly distasteful, inflammatory propaganda just so I can admire the cinematography and great editing. That's just not enjoyable to me.

Doesn't stop people from watching the Avenger movies.

Sure. I'm not saying that no one ever will, or ever should, watch something I'd it has any degree of propaganda.

I think there are some pretty key differences between The Avengers and an anti abortion documentary, though. First, the balance between propaganda and non-propaganda elements in the movies seems like it's probably different. Most of The Avengers and most of the reason people watch The Avenegers is for the entertainment value. I don't know what the equivalent of that is for a political documentary. Second, most people either agree with, or aren't politically critical enough to notice, the propaganda elements of Thr Avengers (rightly or wrongly). Whereas most people in this community are aware of and object to the specific message of the pro-life propaganda.

Plus, Disney doesn't care if you come out of the movie thinking the military is great or not. They only want your coins. And your future coins.

This doc might also want your money, but it's primary goal is to influence you.

This is a far more thoughtful and detailed reply to what I felt was a flippant, edgy comment.

What's propaganda-y about the Avengers movies? I've never seen any of them and have never heard anyone say that.

Some people argue that they act as propaganda for the American military complex.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-03 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
(DA) Given how much money the US military has given Marvel to make these movies, I'd say they agree...

ayrt

Ahh, ok. Just going by the commercials, I could definitely see that.

100% pro-military American exceptionalism, paid for by the US military itself, dressed up in superhero costumes.

What I don't understand is that everyone flipped out and called the fuck out of the Independence Day sequel (rightfully so!) but those same people fall all over themselves to defend Marvel for the exact same thing. Like, I get it, it's your fandom, but it makes you a stunning hypocrite.
