The ending was meant for roughly around s2 when they were afraid it would get canceled. The "Mother" was supposed to be Victoria. The showrunners then sat on it and didn't edit it much which is why we got the mess.

There's actually a ton of contradictions between the ending from s7-s8. For example, in 46 minutes Ted says "Robin traveled the world but was never alone" then the ending has Robin essentially shunning the group while the group calls her an ice queen. Then there's that s8 ep which has Robin and Lily talking through the years about the time Robin lost Marvin's stroller which shows Lily and Robin as friends during a time when Robin was supposed to be completely isolated from the group.

There were so many other instances (like s3 showing that Aunt Robin was a cool aunt to his kids) that showed a complete contradiction to the end.

Anyways, there's an official alternate ending from the last season dvd and that's all that matters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoHUs8J7x94

Tracy lives in this ending. The showrunners confirmed that the smile between Barney and Robin was because they got back together.

"Never alone" what crap

Looking back on it that's probably the most insulting part because the lesson of that episode was not every woman's family is her husband and children. Some women's friends become her family and that's awesome if that's how she wants to live her life. But no, Robin gets dumped by her friends like she never mattered to them later in life. So gross.
