(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)Uderzo, at the time, wanted to understand animanga, bought a random manga that was actually a perverted doujin with tentacles and all, so it only made him hate the genre even more, which prompted him to write the book, as he believed manga style was polluting European comic styles.
The newest books did improve in writing quality. Not Goschinni's quality, but they are a big leap over Uderzo's writing.
I mean, don't get me wrong. Uderzo was a great artist, and he was one of the fathers of Asterix and Obelix. But he didn't have anywhere near the levels of wit and comedy that Goschinni had, and as cynical as this sounds, perhaps it was for the best to actually sell the rights to Asterix to another company.
