When you put it that way, Wakanda reminds me a lot of America. Down to the council members not challenging Killmonger.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, come on, don't you think that's a little facile?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt - I mean, you're right but the kind of people who make trollish political comments here aren't going to understand what "facile" means, much less how it applies to themselves.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a MCU movie, dude, facile is kind of their thing.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Not politically nuanced at all, no.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, he does have superpowers and just murdered their previous king. I'd be a little worried about speaking up as well.

"Hey is anyone going to do something about that?"
"Kurondo, he killed the SUPERPOWERED KING."
"Well, you got me there."

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
They gave him superpowers

After he killed the priest dude

They could have just gone, 'wow, this guy is crazy A.F., lucky we have an entire four tribes of people who don't want to see a homicidal American take over the country (and maybe someone can call the Jabari?), there is very literally no way he can beat all of them'

(Anonymous) 2019-11-10 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I told you this the last time but he's also a trained combatant and like. Even if they did try to take him out, how many of them would die in the process?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-10 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
They are also trained combatants. I don't give a shit what sort of 'superpowers without superpowers' bull Marvel tries to push, one (1) well trained fighter facing an orderly queue of fifty (50) well trained fighters, all of whom are willing to die to keep this frothing lunatic from taking over their country, will not be feeling confident of his chances!
He has to beat every single challanger. They only have to beat *him*.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-10 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
Except HE had his own supporters. It wouldn't be 1 on 50. It'd be his supporters against the dissenters.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-10 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm talking about the challenge grounds business. He beat T'Challa on the challenge grounds - fine. But that means he gets to stand there while Every Other Tribe has a go. The Boarder Tribe wanna support him? Great, they can stand there with pom-poms and sliced oranges for halftime. Otherwise they can suck it.
Unless, of course, they want to openly admit that they don't give a shit about the laws and traditions of Wakanda and they just want everyone to do things the way THEY want, which... would be true, but not exactly smart. The River Tribe, the Merchant Tribe, the Mining Tribe, everyone in the Golden Tribe who isn't named Eric, those guys are still gonna wanna throw down.

Black Panther, while slightly better than the rest of the MCU films, is still a Marvel movie. Of course it makes no sense.

Good point. The MCU is extremely guilty of forgetting its own established rules even in the same movie because they want a certain plot point or aspect of character development to be possible.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
(Nayrt) Yeah, I know. I just keep *wanting* them to make sense. I want them to be good!

Same tbh. I have invested a lot of time in this universe but am at the point where I'm fed up of thinking "wow, this thread shows promise!" only for it to be ignored or changed beyond all recognition. For a while it felt like they cared about character development but they fell into the same massive set pieces trap as any other franchise. I now truly believe that it's often the case that the pay off in good fanworks is better than it is in actual canon.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, this.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Better? Are you kidding me? It was incredibly average and formulaic as far as MCU goes. Not the worst movie, but far from being one of the better ones. The only place where it (kinda) shines is the villain. He wasn't very deep but at least he had a personality unlike most Marvel villains. But everything else was generic as fuck in terms of plot and characters. Marvel films are so bland

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, they are. But compared to some of the more recent ones, Black Panther was far more coherent and entertaining.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Which do you think are the good Marvel films?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that was dumb.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Got this from watching terrible Christmas films. Even when knowing what I'm getting myself into, something will happen in the film that makes me pause and go, "...I don't think you understand how royalty works."

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, yep

Huh.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-10 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe I misunderstood it in the movie, but I'm pretty sure T'Challa could have made a unilateral decision without the council, he just wanted to get them behind the idea. Just because he didn't use his power like Killmonger, doesn't mean he didn't have it. Many in authority have councils of advisors, but they don't have to listen to them. As to why no one spoke out, well, some actually seemed to agree to an extent, and Killmonger was a pretty unknown element, except for, as far as they knew, being a very good killer, and fear keeps people from speaking out. Hell, we have a democracy in the US and think about what Trump has done without approval - sure, there are plenty of lawsuits, but there are also lots of things (like military missions) that just proceeded.
