I’ve seen plausible redemption fics for a few villains who showed no signs of redemption in canon. And if all else fails, there’s the possibility of an AU where the villain avoids making the choice that corrupted them in canon.

(OP of text) I am very flexible about what counts as redeemable - and yes, sometimes all it takes is a sufficiently skilled writer.

Having just read a completely believable one for a character I never in a million years would have believed could have been redeemed (by a favorite author who I already knew could write the character well), I concur. It takes a whole lot more work with some characters, certainly.
