This is me, too, and it ties in with only being able to ship villains with non-villains if the villain has some positive quality other than being powerful, brooding, and/or hot.

Whether they treat their minions/henchmen well, have creative hobbies they’re passionate about (that aren’t torture and murder), are kind to animals or people who pose no threat to them... that they have something to offer a partner that’s not just hard abs, angst about how no one understands why they’re driven to kill millions of people, and the ability to make planets go boom.

You don't even have to name names to tell me you're talking about Kylo Ren, and I love it.

Well, it's definitely a good secret, lol. "redeemed" can be a very flexible word, though.

There's an uncanny valley quality to that fanart that I find disturbing.

I’ve seen plausible redemption fics for a few villains who showed no signs of redemption in canon. And if all else fails, there’s the possibility of an AU where the villain avoids making the choice that corrupted them in canon.

(OP of text) I am very flexible about what counts as redeemable - and yes, sometimes all it takes is a sufficiently skilled writer.

Having just read a completely believable one for a character I never in a million years would have believed could have been redeemed (by a favorite author who I already knew could write the character well), I concur. It takes a whole lot more work with some characters, certainly.

I'm in a different ballpark I guess. I absolutely love villains who have something about them that lends itself to a path to redemption. And I can see why that might be easier in terms of attraction.

But personally I've also not had an issue with enjoying the irredeemable shitheads.

My problem comes in that now it feels like we're at a point where even the irredeemable shitheads require a dark and tragic backstory to make them more palatable. This is despite years of even KIDS being able to find a villain cool and leaving it at that. By this point, I just want it to stop.

Same!

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Worst example. Snape reminds me of that tweet 'I never thought leopards would eat MY face,' sobs woman who voted for the Leopards Eating People's Faces Party. Or that woman who voted for Trump because she thought he would get rid of the bad Mexicans and her husband got deported.

The person who picked the image and the person who wrote the text are not the same person

Also call me crazy but I feel like 'leaving the terrorist organisation you joined as a teenager and risking your life to bring it down' is actually, just possibly, somewhat laudable.

Secret maker here. The person who left this comment didn't specify a fandom or character, so I chose Snape because HP is a popular fandom and I thought this artist did a good job.

See, I only find them hot if they're good at being villains. Competent evil is so much sexier than half-assed bullshit. Redemption doesn't factor in at all to me.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Hard same. Admittedly, I'm way more flexible about what "redeemable" means in fiction than I am in reality (but I'm pretty sure almost everybody is like this).

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
So not Snape then.

and here my only quality is they have to be hot.

redeemable, irredeemable, good at it, bad at it, tragic backstory, no reason to the evil whatsoever...none of that determines whether a villain is hot or not.

not saying you're wrong OP, you do you and rock it, just wondering if I'm the only one for whom hotness is purely a physical trait. or I guess whether it matters if they're still smokin hot when they have a quality you don't like - will you still admit they're smokin hot or is their attractiveness entirely muted by their other qualities? whatever villainy qualities make you appreciate a villain. and can you suddenly find an unattractive villain hot if they have your specified qualities?

not OP but what constitutes 'hot' or not is extremely subjective but it also reminds me of good looking jerks - getting by on their looks could be the reason I could see why people like them but if they're reprehensible I wouldn't want to ship them with other people unless they are equally bad. The whole concept of romantic love either redeeming a hardened villain or corrupting a hero is overdone IMO

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
OP of text - I'm into anime, and there are any number of very hot characters who are also very, very terrible people, and when I look at them, I just go... 'Jesus Christ what an arsehole. What a piece of shit. Fuck you.' So I suppose that yes, their personalities, the things they've done, those are more important than their appearances when it comes to the question of attraction.

In my case, I don't mind whether or not they're redeemable, but they have to not be petty. If you're going to be evil, do it big, do it strong, and do it for a purpose. Confidence, courage, conviction. Cowards and whiny assholes need not apply.

I'm just a sucker for charismatic villains who are scary but can also be funny sometimes.

Then why is there a picture of Severus "I bully kids" Snape?
