Somewhat inspired by #3...

Man, I'm just really tired of romance having to be in EVERYTHING. I was really liking the book I'm reading until they introduced this Mary Sue-ish love interest for the main character and suddenly it got so. boring. They seemed to be hinting that he was gay (he was constantly musing about how he was never really into his estranged wife, and he'd never really been particulary interested in ANY woman before) and then bam, super stereotypical lame het romance. Turns out the "never been interested in any women before" was just the beginning of "...until I met this super ~special amazing wonderful~ woman".

I don't mind romances that are well done and interesting, but the huge majority of the ones I come across are just so...lazy and predictable and boring.

I just really wish there were more things that didn't feel the need to shove romance into the story. It really doesn't need to be in everything ever. Grrr.

I’m always pleasantly surprised when I read a book and it doesn’t have romance in it. I love reading about romance, but I don’t like to see it shoehorned in.

On the one hand, I get this, and on the other hand, the fictional romances I’ve actually liked, outside of fanfic, have almost all been part of a larger story, rather than the main focus of the narrative. I think maybe it’s because so many romance tropes hinge on “not like the other girls,” and “if only we’d taken two minutes to talk we could’ve avoided all this relationship drama,” and “I’m a masterful alpha male and you’re a fiery but still virginal heiress” and so on, and I like my tropes less bodice ripper and more “women have lives outside of romance.”

Of course, then the problem becomes that so many women are written to be love interests first, and interesting characters second, if at all. And so many men are written as though their existence in proximity to said love interests make those men irresistible. Obligatory romances are annoying, and it’s rare to find a romance subplot that doesn’t just feel like the writers were checking off a list somewhere, but when they’re well done, romances that are only one part of a story are my favorites.

Agree. Romance is just way too prevalent, and most of it is really poorly written.

That sounds awful, it has to be one of the worst tropes to exist. Like, just let him be alone if thats where he's happy. Ugh...

At my age, I feel like I'm DONE with het romances. I've seen all the tropes, all the shoehorned in love interests, all the Mary and Gary Stu's a billion times. It's so boring and tired. However...same sex romance? Whoa, color me interested. Because it's not as tied in to traditional gender roles (blech), it comes across as much more interesting, and the dynamics feel fresh and new. Of course, this means jerks in my life accuse me of 'being all about the gays'.

I'd be down for this kind of trope if the actual love interest/romance was really different in an unconventional way, not just because the lady/chad is super amazing at everything and beautiful and whatever.
