How dull.

Does it apply to other criminal groups or pirates specifically?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Why not?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
A good pirate never what?!

I get this is for very young kids but if they wanted to teach a lesson about not stealing they shouldn't be using pirates, ffs.

Yes! Thank you!

Pirates were and are awful, I don't know how they got romanticised so much.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
People constantly romanticize awful things from history. It's not like it's limited to pirates.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Bards and storytelling coupled with a lot of alcohol, generally, as all things are

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Technically not that much worse than the legal navy, really.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, no more than the forces they fight against. I mean, Somalia is treated as a chemical dumping ground for rich nations, why shouldn't Somalians go attack our ships?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 09:42 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god, one of those. They attack random civilians who have nothing to do with it in order to make a ton of cash, if you think that's social justice you're a moron.

Why not? IRL, most pirates were just soldiers that were basically abandoned after the wars they fought in were won, and became pirates to survive. (or something like that) They're probably the most sympathetic criminal groups of the many. (pirate code, while not lawful, was also a real thing so most of them weren't that bad)
Obviously not all characters follow real life examples, but I'll take the leap since your secrets sorta vague.

this, I mean...I've done a lot of reading on actual history because it fascinates me and yeah, shit was fucked up but honestly in the 1550-1720 segment there, the "law" was actually worse. I don't have strong feelings romanticising actual historical pirates, some of them were barely criminal while others were awful but at least they weren't being starved by naval commanders and press-ganged into suicide missions.

but on the flip side, there are plenty of fictional pirates (including Robert Louis Stevenson's own romanticising of them) who abide more by a general idea of sticking it to the man and hell yeah I can get behind those 100%.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely!

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely bollocks I assume you meant to say. Please learn some history that isn't based on wishful thinking.

Yeah, pirates were generally more democratically set up, voting on who would be captain and officers as well as what the ship's next goal/destination would be, and the average pirate sailor got a MUCH bigger chunk of prizes than any privateer seaman would have. Sure, some of them were absolute dicks, but the same could be said of any historical figure, especially the memorable ones.

That's fine, anon! Another person's trash is another person's treasure. Personally, I like pirates because I adore the Lovable Rogue type and they tend to fit into that specific character archetype. So hey.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
One person's trash is another person's treasure... island, you say? >__>

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 02:08 am (UTC)(link)

Dear OP,

That is all.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
ONE PIECE BROFIST

talk about a great fictionalization about sticking it to the man
