I may be misremembering, but wasn't Stephanie Meyer against fanfiction in general? One could argue that Twilight is Mormon fanfiction, but I legit don't think she could've gotten anywhere with a lawsuit.

You're misremembering. She's enthusiastic about fanfiction in that slightly condescending "it's a great way for kids to learn about writing" way.

Thanks for the reminder, anon. I knew she said something about fanfiction, but couldn't quite remember what it was.

DA - For future reference, George R R Martin, Anne Rice, and Diana Gabaldon are the main ones I know of who are anti fanfic. Also, Anne McCaffrey used to be, but she seems to have chilled out a bit and is now just kind of weary about it but not actually against it?

I'm sure there are more, but those are the main ones people tend to talk about.

Anne McCaffrey's been dead for eight years, anon.

So she's chilled out a lot.

Bwahaha!

Well, in that case she relaxed her stance before she died. I've seen posts by her saying she simply cannot allow fanfic based on her works to exist unopposed, and I've also seen posts by her saying she's fine with it as long as nobody makes any money off of it.

From everything I've seen, her objection was always on legal, not moral grounds. She seemed to genuinely fear that being supportive of fanworks would weaken her own legal claim on the copyrighted material. *Shrugs*

Robin McKinley is strongly against it too, iirc. Which is pretty funny, given her reluctance to write sequels.

And her multiple retellings of existing fairytales. Get your own ideas like you insist everyone should!
