*Shrug* everyone in SFF does this thing of focusing on the bits they're most comfortable with and patching over the rest with the equivalent of matte paintings and set dressing from IKEA. Including JRR Tolkien, if we're going to be honest (although he didn't have IKEA so don't stretch that metaphor too far.)
