You do realize that not all places on Earth have 4 distinct seasons, right?

Dude, is this necessary? Like... Everyone is about suspension if disbelief for good storytelling until they aren't?

Given we don't see any indication whatsoever that anyone in Essos is concerned about the possibility of a years-long winter to come, it seems likely that the fucked up seasons are a Westerosi issue. It's entirely possible that they measure a year based on a system imposed after the Targaryen conquest, whether that's lunar-based or based on Essosi seasons.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Crop harvests. They would always be a need to measure how long it takes for crops to grow and be harvested before they're lost.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah all that stuff never really made sense to me, it seemed like it just got forgotten 95% of the time

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I want to know what the fuck they're eating all winter and what their livestock eat. I vaguely remember reference to a greenhouse of some sort in winterfell, but for roses.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Wasn't there at least a little mention about how all the battles up and down the continent were smashing up fields and ruining crops and killing the people who would otherwise harvest the crops? They sure as hell won't be eating much at all come winter.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
IIRC, the south of Westeros wasn't as affected by winters, so they would still be producing crops. I have no idea what the North trades for it. Maybe, during a winter, the monarch can redistribute food as needed?

I can't figure out how people lived north of the Wall.

Hunting and raiding. They hunted for meat and they raided for the rest when they could. Remember, the entire Wall isn't guarded, only the Castle and East Watch are. In between, it's fair game.

I agree. He had some interesting ideas but could never follow through on them. Good worldbuilding takes a lot more than that.

I didn't watch the show or read the books, but I definitely have questions! Are there landmasses in the opposite hemisphere where the seasons are flipped or are the seasons planet-wide? Are conditions different at lower and higher latitudes? Are there extreme migrations of some species, where a lot of birds just go away for years and live in a warmer area? Are the winters really that harsh and do most plants just go dormant for years? Do people switch from farming to hunting/fishing in the winter? What do the animals eat if the plants go dormant and aren't regenerating? Do you just have to have a shit-ton of food stored up? What about fuel if new trees aren't sprouting and growing to replace those cut down for firewood? What does all of this do to the economy when you loose your ability to farm for years at a time?

Somehow, figuring out how the setting actually functions is waaayyyy more interesting and compelling than "The Royals Are At It Again" Take 867-F.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, yep

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Somewhere in the back of my mind I'm still hoping for someone to take this concept and actually do something with it because he blew it.

In my experience I feel like sci-fi handles this sort of stuff a lot better (or at least more frequently) than fantasy does.

I'm not a fan of Game of Thrones but I used to be a fan of GRRM's earlier work. It did have its share of plot holes. Also he's had a thing about seasons for a really long time.

*Shrug* everyone in SFF does this thing of focusing on the bits they're most comfortable with and patching over the rest with the equivalent of matte paintings and set dressing from IKEA. Including JRR Tolkien, if we're going to be honest (although he didn't have IKEA so don't stretch that metaphor too far.)

Considering, based on the books, which have loads more details than the show ever did, that these long seasons seem to only happen in *Westeros*, I'm going with magic. Something happened during the Long Night that was confined *only* to Westeros, and didn't affect Essos. Or maybe the Doom of Valyria caused it, who knows.

Anyone read Fire and Blood yet, about the Targaryans? Maybe it's explained in there, since it's supposed to be a prequal. Or the book about the world of GoT.

Or!

It's in the next book GRRM is *still, forever and ever* writing. }:P
