Games thread!

Ha, yeah, it took me a bit to get past that at first, too.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
...what

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes....parents just want to take a shit in peace.

I think 'behind the scenes'.

BTK just doesn't automatically come to mind for me (though, weirdly, when I hear or see BTK, first I think serial killer, then Burger King).

LOL!

It's a good look, pity about everything else. I didn't really read anything about this special beforehand so had no idea about the fact the modern Sherlock would feature. I was actually looking forward to "what if Sherlock but the original book setting?" and then I got...that. And still I persisted and gave series 4 a try.

I know they did say that's it but I fear they don't mean it. By this point I wouldn't care if there's a new series because I'm done.

I'd heard it was kinda bad before I saw it, but wanted to see it anyway because I like historical settings. But yeah... that was bad. Though honestly, I was never a huge fan of the show. The first season had promise, but IMO it went unfulfilled and then tanked.

Historical eras you love...

(Anonymous) 2019-11-15 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
... whether it's for original fiction or AUs, what period of history do you love reading/watching?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-15 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh. Ughhhhhhhhh. Hate those commercials, sorry OP.

For a while it felt like it was an absolute fandom no-no to say it but in my mind you're absolutely correct. The first season was the peak and even then episode 2 was weaker than the two surrounding it.

Season 2 was ok tbh until we got that insulting shitshow season 3 premier that felt like it was going out of its way to mock the fanbase for caring about knowing the solution. I should've got out then really.

C'mon, it wasn't a great episode, but terrible? Seriously? Why is everyone so extremist these days, it feels so childish. Everything is 10/10 FLAWLESS MASTERPIECE or TRASH, TERRIBLE, WORST THING EVER. Meh.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-15 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Obviously I don't know the intra-group dynamics of whatever literature fandom spaces these are.

But it seems like a slightly weird question to ask in the first place. Whether or not long-dead authors would find porn empowering seems like it's mostly of pure historical interest, and I think the more important question is how we ourselves should feel about it. Certainly from a feminist point of view.

Anything from the Russian Tzarist era. Ancient Greece/Rome. Actually really anything ancient. I'm really interested in how cultures developed in different parts of the world. Early European history (anything pre-middle ages really). Civil rights era. Late 1700s/early 1800s.

not OP - I completely sympathize with parents! parents aren't to blame for the media ecosystem or the material conditions of raising kids. but I also kinda think OP is right to be critical of the companies involved and the broader trend.

I find it more absurd than judgmental. Now, compilations of people from daytime talk shows - that</> shit is extremely judgmental and weird and frequently racist.

How do you know they *wouldn't*?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-15 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like the awfulness that was season 4 made a lot of people go "... but the first three seasons* were so good and then THAT happened!" and I keep thinking no... no they were not good. They might seem good compared to season 4, but to me, they always fell far short of what I'd hoped. The show and any pretense at writing decent plots was quickly swallowed by the main characters and their personal lives, and I still think it was a criminal waste of a character like Irene Adler.

* Or was it two seasons? I can't recall.

There are a lot of people who really can't wrap their heads around the fact that empowerment is not one size fits all. I just hope that most of them are young and still developing and that they'll get there, but it's exhausting to deal with sometimes.

I'll watch historical anything for the costume and setting, but for fiction reading I'd rather have contemporary or future (though I generally don't read fanfic AUs). ~ I'll read historical non-fiction or biography, though.

Calling something terrible isn't the same thing as using hyperbole and saying it's the "WORST THING EVER", though. You're the only one here being extremist.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-15 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
it seems like a fairly likely bet for most older authors, surely, just going off the social mores of the times. Obviously there's some where that's not the case but I think it's a reasonable generalization.
