Obviously I don't know the intra-group dynamics of whatever literature fandom spaces these are.

But it seems like a slightly weird question to ask in the first place. Whether or not long-dead authors would find porn empowering seems like it's mostly of pure historical interest, and I think the more important question is how we ourselves should feel about it. Certainly from a feminist point of view.

How do you know they *wouldn't*?

it seems like a fairly likely bet for most older authors, surely, just going off the social mores of the times. Obviously there's some where that's not the case but I think it's a reasonable generalization.

Eh. We can't really know what people thought or felt, particularly if they were ahead of their time re: being feminist. I mean - sex wasn't invented in the 80's or anything, and a lot of dirty stuff went on, just really under the radar and 'off book'.

So - i'm gonna go with we can't ever really know, and some of them might have just loved the fuck out of it.

Not that I've read much of her work, but I'll bet Aphra Behn would have been into it.

That said, I have some sympathy for the OP not to want to have constant discussions about it.

Oh, sure, I get that.

I guess they're hanging out in other types of fandom places, 'cause i've literally seen no one discussing it except for this secret.

And really - consider the Marquis de Sade and Madam Bovary and all the 'naughty' pictures and plays and books that have been around since....forever. It's just weird to imagine *no one* before modern times would like porn.

I don't actually remember anyone discussing it either, but I don't really hang out in literature fandoms.

There are a lot of people who really can't wrap their heads around the fact that empowerment is not one size fits all. I just hope that most of them are young and still developing and that they'll get there, but it's exhausting to deal with sometimes.

Oh gosh yes

I don't know why they would care so much if they did. Seems like they care more about if that long dead author would approve of their personal past times, imo.

I think trying to insist that any long-dead person would agree with you and approve of your preferences about anything is pretty weak. It's trying to use their authority to try to give weight to your position, but you're just using them like a puppet because they're not actually here to speak for themselves. Even if there's every chance they would agree and approve, you don't actually know exactly what they would think (assuming they didn't leave some extremely specific writing on the subject). I wouldn't want to be used like a puppet that way.
