Current TV shows you're watching....

[personal profile] tabaqui 2019-11-15 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
What's got you excited?
I just watched both season of 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' and *really* enjoyed it. It was so, so, so fun, i was literally 'lol'ing.

I also just watched the Norwegian Netflix offering of 'Beforeigners' - WOW that is cool! I hope they make a second season for sure.

I finally got onto this streaming thing when my cable offered HBO, and I'm finding What We Do in the Shadows to be an utter delight.

My issue with Maisel is that I'm just fundamentally uninterested in watching shows about failing or complicated marriages? I love all the other parts of the show, though. Just, some of the drama bits are a turnoff.

Main thing I'm still keeping up with is Evil, which is OK. Has a good balance of fun creepy stuff and goofy dumb stuff to laugh at. Great cast.

Edwardian/Victorian, the sixties/seventies (particularly anything about Vietnam and the space race), the 1500s (Lady Jane Grey and such), ancient Egypt and Rome, pre 'discovery' Americas.

I was rewaching Whose Line is it Anyway. That's on the computer that is in the shop, though. So the past couple days I started a Doctor Who rewatch from the beginning of New Who. When I get my old computer back, I'm also excited to give His Dark Materials a try. I like fantasy, and I did enjoy the first book. I miss good fantasy tv.

ALL OF THEM, up to ca. 1930.

Eh. We can't really know what people thought or felt, particularly if they were ahead of their time re: being feminist. I mean - sex wasn't invented in the 80's or anything, and a lot of dirty stuff went on, just really under the radar and 'off book'.

So - i'm gonna go with we can't ever really know, and some of them might have just loved the fuck out of it.

It was three. I checked because honestly I've only re-watched the first two, which just about says it all!

You're right about Irene Adler as well. Definitely one of the downsides to the second season as I forgot to take into account how badly the show used her.

As for the personal lives of the characters they even failed at that ultimately because I struggled to understand how John could continue to justify being friends with an absolute dick like Sherlock. Ok Holmes has a certain edge to him in the source material, but it's not like *that*.

I'm enjoying "Evil", too. I especially agree about the cast. They're my favorite thing about the show thus far and I'm enjoying getting to know more about them and seeing them interact as time goes on.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-15 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I think turning up the asshole dial on Sherlock was something the writers thought was clever, but I didn't care for it. I also didn't care for the interpretation that "Sherlock is an asshole because he doesn't understand people". You can't be a good detective if you don't understand how human beings work.

Relax, Moffat. Plenty of people still think you're the greatest thing since sliced bread!

I found the first season to be really something, certainly in comparison to most British detective shows having come before it. It was fresh and new and it stood out, and I liked it enough to re-watch it several times.

The second series, not so much, and by the time the third came around, I'd heard enough bad things about it to not even bother.

I'm still not sure whether the first series truly was that good in comparison or if it was just shiny and new, or if the later series were truly worse or just not having the benefit of the "wow"-factor that the first one had.

I mean, basically anything from the Crusader era up through to the 1940s. I've a lot of little specialty times and places of interest in that thousand odd years, but I'll take much of anything.

I'm not as fond of ancient world stories, and for some reason I hate Roman AUs in most fandoms. Possibly because a lot of the ones I've come across are shallow slave AUs, I think.

I also don't have a lot of interest in the world wars in and of themselves. Merge them with genres, dieselpunk or weird war or the like, then yes, but straight historical fiction not so much.

Alongside "Evil" in terms of new stuff, I've also been watching a few interesting docuseries lately, There's a fascinating one on Starz I've been following called Leavenworth. It's a five-part series about the case of soldier Clint Lorance, and the political controversy that swirled around his case. I'd never heard this story before now, and all the different perspectives on what went down are very interesting.

And it's from a couple months back, but Sundance had a good docuseries recently called No One Saw a Thing, about the 1981 murder of Ken McElroy in Skidmore, Missouri, that I found intriguing as well.

I'm also enjoying my regular shows like "The Good Doctor" and HTGAWM. This is the latter's final season, so I'm curious to see how they'll wrap things up.

While too much screentime is bad, like... that doesn't mean shows for preschoolers shouldn't exist. Preschoolers live in a world where there are screens and we're not going back to a time where that isn't true. Content for preschoolers isn't the problem, it's the amount of content consumed and the way it's consumed.

It's not harmful for a small child to have a little TV time, with stories that are at a level they can understand and engage with, and parents present to engage with them about the show and share enjoyment. Sometimes you just have to suck it up and watch a show that feels mindless and unfunny to you, because it's not good to hand over your phone and let your kid watch things on it unfettered, but when you watch a show together, your kid is learning more than just whatever shape/color/alphabet/number lesson a kiddie show imparts-- they're learning how to share enjoyment, they're learning general media literacy and how to talk to someone about a thing they're watching-- which means their vocabulary is improving (and hearing new words through a show is still improving vocab, even if TV is no replacement for parents/caregivers), they're developing the important skill that is 'sit fairly calmly for several minutes', not to mention an attention span.

(Yes! An attention span! Too much screentime may be bad for all of our attention spans, but that doesn't mean all screntime is bad for the attention span. A kid starts without any attention span to speak of, but a colorful thing that holds their attention is step one to being able to sit down and pay attention, and as long as it's balanced out with learning to pay attention to non-screen things, rather than being relied on as a babysitter, that's not all bad)

Some shows made for preschoolers may be hot garbage, I don't know anything about this one. Some just feel that way when you try to watch them as an adult. Most shows for little kids aren't going to be Mister Rogers, but carefully rationed/monitored screentime is part of raising a kid, and removing all of that leads to kids who are not as tech or media literate as their peers, which sets them back.

30 Years War. 1830s through the First World War, mostly, except the 1850s and 1860s are a bit dull. Europe between the Wars. Asian history from... I don't know, rise of Islam to about 17th century in general.

Heh, only a rewatch will answer that question! I watch a lot of British detective shows and I enjoyed the Arthur Conan Doyle stories as well as the older Jeremy Brett adaptation. The first season of Sherlock was very stylish, but even then I thought hmmmm, I'd like there to be more substance to go with all that style. I don't feel like I ever got it, tbh.

Oh, hell. I have recollections of grown ass men and women shit talking goddamn CHILDREN (instead of recognizing they were looking at young people in desperate need of help), and a stupid audience APPLAUDING, on shows like Jenny or Ricki or Sally. Basically a preview of the internet.

I really wish humans would do better.

I love buying things for people but damn, I wish I had more money. :(

And yeah, I know "it's the thought that counts" and you can give people great presents or homemade presents, etc. I know. I still wish I had more money.

Every year my parents say they aren't going to get much for each other to save money. And every year they both get multiple presents for each other anyway. And every year my dad gets annoyed at my mom for "spending too much on him." Even though he did the same thing, and even though gift giving is something important to her (she always goes all out and gets the perfect gift for people for every occasion). Can't he just be grateful and make her feel good for getting him something he likes? I know he's frugal, but it is Christmas. And he spent money on her too.

My most favorite time period is anywhere between 1400 to early 1900. Renaissance, Baroque, Jacksonian, Antebellum, Victorian, and Edwardian especially.

Ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt.

Prehistoric, especially Neanderthal/Early Human.

For regular TV I'm watching His Dark Materials every Sunday, I like what it's doing so far but I'll have my full thoughts on it when the season is over.

Finished all of s4 of She-Ra which I had a blast with, I'm really interested to see how they'll tie everything up and finish it, as we're down to the last 13 eps(unsure if they'll release them as a whole 13 ep season or split them in half so the show has 6 seasons in total)

And I'm currently working through a K-Drama on Netflix called Rookie Historian: Goo Hae-Ryung, which is about a women who becomes a female historian in ye olde Korea. The characters are fun, I like the main lady a lot and while the tonal-whiplash between the comedy and more srs business political plot is a little jarring it's still really quite entertaining. Also they keep playing Flight of the Bumblebees for some reason during some Dramatic moments and I have no idea why, but it's fantastic.
