Am I the only person here who is so, so tired of hearing this constant refrain.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-16 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'd probably be tired of it if it was a constant refrain but I don't know that it actually is. At any rate, it seems more polite to opt out of a conversation you're tired of instead of subtly implying that other people aren't being entertaining enough to suit you.

I'm tired of hearing "Stories about oppression shouldn't exist, and people who write about it are secretly oppression fetishists because why else would they choose to write about that when they could create a fictional world where oppression doesn't exist, I am a mind-reader and know this is every author's intent blah blah BLAAAH"

"It's too bleak for me" is a personal opinion, so it's different. "Don't like, don't read" is fine. I don't think the OP is doing what I talked about above, and I wish more people who didn't like stories about oppression would admit it's a personal opinion and not expect the literary world to cater to them.

+1, the OP says "for me" so I'm fine with that. They're not saying it shouldn't be written or is detracting from a thing they otherwise like.

It's funny this came up today, because I just started into the Stormblood expansion of FFXIV, and I'm actually really intrigued by how it's handling the topic of what oppression does to the oppressed. A few days ago, I might have agreed with you, but now I kind of think it matters how it's handled. It's not a topic that a lot of people have a lot of flair with, though, and that does get tiring.

Fair enough. I avoid most stories where health issues feature prominently, even if it's all about overcoming them.

Yup. I'm okay with it being in the past or having been overcome and maybe some corner of the 'verse is still catching up or something, but....there's enough horror and misery in the real world. Fandom is my happy place.
Also why I avoid rape and domestic violence and torture, etc., in fic.

I'm fine with it if it's like 1984, when everybody is living under a repressive regime. Or if it's about something historic like the Gulag system.

If it's just women, like The Handmaid's Tale? Hard no. Or gay people being oppressed? Because I am those things and it's too much, because I'm actually afraid of shit irl.

I feel you op

I initially misread this as "it's too black for me" and wow did that make me do a double take lol

Same!
