I figure most people who post it online care what other people think about it. The people who don’t care are writing self-insert OT3 fix fic in their three-ring binders.

This. If I didn't care whether other people read my idea I'd just sit around and think about it.

I think most people want likes and comments.

You're not allowed to want views or likes or comments these days, it's Bad and Wrong and Ableist and probably racist and probably even makes you a Nazi somehow. According to Tumblr anyway.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-16 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I care, certainly. The slow death of comment culture is one reason why I'm making the switch to orig fic. If I'm not getting interaction, I may at least get a bit of money?

Oddly enough, I find small fandoms are among the worst for feedback. A bunch of kudos are not enough to keep me writing, folks! Not if I've spent months on a fic.

Let's get this out of the way: There is nothing wrong with enjoying positive attention for the things you create.

Yeah, I know there are plenty of people eager to make nasty remarks about entitled writers and HOW DARE THEY want positive feedback for their fics and art, OH MY GOD SO ENTITLED!!!!

They're assholes.

Sure, there are entitled creators who hold chapters hostage or act like their fans only exist to worship them, but we're not talking about those people - they're assholes, too. But it's stupid to pretend that everyone who likes seeing a new review left on their fic is entitled in any way, or that there's anything broken about enjoying people enjoying what you made.

THIS!!
It's not shameful or 'lame' or 'selling out' or wtf ever to *enjoy* people saying 'i liked that!' whether in comment or kudo. All of us that publish stuff online feel that, even if we bury it.

Very well put!

Most weeks I'll see a tumblr post about how wanting comments is evil or a whole post with a million reblogs about how the OP is INCAPABLE of commenting and we're hurting their feelings.
I've seen multiple posts whining about authors who want feedback "just for writing some words" and these assholes can get lost with that attitude and never read fanfic or look at fanart again because they don't seem to get that likes/comments/reblogs/communication is the social currency that makes fandom work.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-16 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
This idea that we shouldn't care what other people think and just do what makes us happy, be it in fandom context or with life in general, has been taken out of context. It's supposed to mean, "If you like what you do, you shouldn't fear judgement, because liking it is all the justification you need to do it", not "If you like what you do, you don't need validation".

So keep feeling that way, and don't feel bad about it. Wanting acknowledgement for something you put work into does not make you a bad person.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-17 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
This. I'm tired of people trying to shame other people for wanting validation for their work.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-17 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I needed to hear this today. <3

(Anonymous) 2019-11-19 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a great way of putting it, because the former makes people create, the latter makes them feel guilty about wanting people to like their creations.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-16 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, like.. I like baking, but I'm gonna be really upset if I bake a cake and no-one eats it. The satisfaction of creation is one thing, but the satisfaction of creating something that other people then consume and enjoy - that's on a whole 'nother level!

(Anonymous) 2019-11-16 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
LMAO, I just posted in the Gripe Thread yesterday about how I wished more people would comment on my fics, so I feel you, OP.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-16 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
there's nothing wrong with wanting positive feedback or attention for your fics/art/whatever, but i really do encourage people not to put so much of their self-worth into how much feedback they receive. not because you're not deserving of it, but because if for whatever reason your fanwork doesn't get the attention you wanted you don't fall into a pit of thinking you aren't good enough.

people not engaging with your stuff doesn't inherently mean you're bad or what you made is terrible, because tbh what gets popular/notice in fandoms is so god damn random.

it's why i think having a small circle of supporters is more fun than hoping for fandom-wide accolades. so long as i make a few people happy and who like what i've done that's enough for me to keep going.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-17 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Wanting validation is okay. Just don't let it be the only reason to write fanfic.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-17 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I love validation, who doesn't? But that's not the sole reason I write fic.
