If I spend ten hours drawing something, I don't see much of a problem selling a $2.50 print of it for $7. I kinda feel like my time and energy is worth that much, at least.

Also, not that you care, but the vast majority of Artist Alley types are lucky to break even at a con, even if it's a local one. An AA table mostly just allows us to be able to afford going to the con in the first place.

And really, nothing's stopping fic writers from printing up books, particularly when the property in question wasn't originally text. Except worry that no one would buy them, I suppose.

You're absolutely right... in that fan writers should worry about no one buying their printed stories. There is no demand for prints of fanfiction that I know of, and since the trade-off is not the same, you can say that fan authors and fan artists would not be catering to the same market if they chose to sell their fan works. There is really no market for fanfiction, but if there were, I'm certain that it would be sold - if there's a way to make money, it's pretty much impossible to prevent people from pursuing it.

But just because they can, does it mean they should? Everyone who goes to a convention has to shoulder the costs - the fact that fan artists have a means to alleviate the burden of expenses already gives them an advantage over your average fan. Never mind fic writers (though I think that some degree of effort goes into writing fanfic, even if I don't know from experience), what about cosplayers who presumably spend money and effort on their costumes on top of con-going expenses? Sure, the artist makes a physical contribution to the fandom, but if they get paid for it, would that still be in the spirit of fandom?

Of course, fan artists have to pay in order to set up a AA table, which is an extra cost most con-goers don't have to worry about. But the only reason a commercialized AA exists is because of the market for fan art - and the only point I want to make is that that I don't support that market.

For one thing, cosplayers can and often do sell new or used costumes and cosplay accessories to cover their own costs. However, we hardly ever see this sort of morality argument in regards to that practice, for a variety of reasons (some of which are reasonable and some of which I personally find ridiculous.)

But as I said in my last comment to you, you can do or not do whatever you like. Just don't be surprised when other people bristle at being told they're engaging in morally reprehensible activities.

I will do nothing of the sort, as long as fan artists are not surprised to be told that, while no absolute moral judgment can be made, their activities are at the very least liable to be questioned.

"And really, nothing's stopping fic writers from printing up books, particularly when the property in question wasn't originally text. Except worry that no one would buy them, I suppose."

I dunno. 'Thou shalt not take money' is pretty crucial to the whole fanfiction ethos and the ficcers' idea of the fan economy. I know quite a lot of fen who won't even post their fic to sites that make ad revenue (like ffn). Of course, this may have naturally developed because, as the mouse above me says, the market demand is different for fic.

I would also say that, aside from that, most folk buy art so they can have a pretty thing to look at, maybe put on the wall, or something. Fic...you put it in a drawer on on a shelf at the end of the day, if it were a hardcopy. You don't look at it quick and feel happy. Or whatever.

I think part of what makes art more acceptable than fic as a sale is that art tends to be pin-up type. It's not trying to tell a story (well, beyond a simple quick-narrative). I'd imagine most American companies would have a slight problem with selling fan-comics.
