I dunno. 'Thou shalt not take money' is pretty crucial to the whole fanfiction ethos and the ficcers' idea of the fan economy. I know quite a lot of fen who won't even post their fic to sites that make ad revenue (like ffn). Of course, this may have naturally developed because, as the mouse above me says, the market demand is different for fic.

I would also say that, aside from that, most folk buy art so they can have a pretty thing to look at, maybe put on the wall, or something. Fic...you put it in a drawer on on a shelf at the end of the day, if it were a hardcopy. You don't look at it quick and feel happy. Or whatever.

I think part of what makes art more acceptable than fic as a sale is that art tends to be pin-up type. It's not trying to tell a story (well, beyond a simple quick-narrative). I'd imagine most American companies would have a slight problem with selling fan-comics.
