I don't know that he's snobbish exactly, but her certainly comes off as pretty sarcastic and sneering, IMO.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-24 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
He does come off that way in interviews, which is a shame because I don't mind him as an actor. He does play the same guy in everything, but he's decent at it? He's very watchable, IMO.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-24 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
He always comes across as that sexist, racist guy who won't stop bitching about PC culture in interviews, and he has no acting range at all. Media as a whole would be better off without him.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-24 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Always or just like...one interview?

He does come across like that a bit in interviews. But I love him as Bilbo and Ross in the MCU.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-24 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I didn't like him as Bilbo at all, he was too much Old Curmudgeon and not... very lighthearted in the way Bilbo was? There was like zero brevity to his interpretation, which made him come across as very stodgy, in a way that I don't think Bilbo was meant to be read.

I do think he could have had more brevity, but I think he made up for it in other ways. And the way he played off the other characters worked for me. I believed the friendships formed.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-24 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
To each their own, I guess. The friendships felt hollow and forced to me, with the exception of like... Bombur, who I think was just genuine and adorable enough to make up for it, haha.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-25 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Brevity? Do you mean levity? Because brevity makes no sense in this context, unless I'm missing something really obvious.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-25 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Derp, brainfart. Yes, levity is what I meant, thank you.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-24 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
All I have to say is that when I saw the buckles on his shoes, for a second I thought he'd paired sandals + socks with a suit.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-24 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if he comes across as snobbish exactly, but he definitely comes across as...idk, someone who masks an underlying current of anger with (sometimes unpleasant and inappropriate) humor? Plus, he's one of those people who falls a bit too far on the anti-social justice side, imo. Like, he sometimes seems more upset by SJWs going OTT than he is by actual serious social justice issues?

I do think he's a hell of a good actor, though, and personally I think he has a lot of range. He seems like a completely different person in several of the roles I've seen him in.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-24 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
He *has* stuck his foot pretty thoroughly in it a few times - I recall he said something vaguely racist about Lucy Liu once, though I think it was supposed to be a joke and was just... really ill-considered?
Anyway, I understand you getting that vibe, OP.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-24 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
LMAO, I almost commented about that incident (he called Liu "a dog", IIRC) then figured it wasn't worth whatever barrel of worms I opened up, so +1.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-24 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it was clearly an attempt at sarcasm, but it fell flat.

Actually you're pretty right. Freeman is an asshole.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-24 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate him and refuse to watch shows with him in them.

Fuck him

(Anonymous) 2019-11-24 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Well from what I hear about him he's kinda a dick.

Yeah, same.

I have reasons which I find difficult to articulate, but I don't consider that an rrrational dislike. It simply means that I'm not interested in spending the energy to do a qualitative analysis.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-25 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure he’s a racist so you ain’t wrong.

He didn't used to be as stand-offish as he is now, I don't think.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-25 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
And a lot of that is definitely down to him, his choices and the hostility with which he reacts to some things, but some of his "fans" have been inappropriate, offensive, bullying, and/or downright threatening. So there's some of his animosity that I find somewhat understandable. Some.

Re: He didn't used to be as stand-offish as he is now, I don't think.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-25 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't particularly like him, but I also think some of the nonsense around the scarier end of Sherlock fandom would make even quite sunny-tempered people twitchy and suspicious.

(Cumberbatch seems to have taken his fandom better, but it might be relevant that his first encounter with fans was via the much, much smaller Cabin Pressure fandom, which seem to have been mostly grounded, good humoured, and sensible about boundaries).

(Anonymous) 2019-11-26 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I love him but maybe that's because I've loved some prickly men IRL. It's funny you say "snobbish" though, since he's always worn his working class roots on his sleeve.

I think he went through some bad shit in bbc sherlock fandom & it changed him, too.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-28 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not really fond of him either, but I think that the Sherlock fandom is what put me off of him. Same with Cumberbatch. But I have heard some not so nice things about Martin Freeman so maybe my judgement isn't too bad.
