OP

I'm good so long as they know the bare basics and don't make a big deal about it. I'm not even the best cook myself, but I can't stand when a character who's supposed to be smart can't tell the difference between sugar or flour;;

I was thinking of the Persona series in particular for this, and made the comment after nopeing out of a fic where the main girl put the whole (unopened, the plastic packaging still on) container of instant ramen in a public dorms microwave. She went back to her own dorm and feel asleep and it started a fire that made the whole building evacuate at two in the morning. If that wasn't bad enough, when a different character, very understandably, got angry about it, she (and the rest of the cast) turned on the guy as if he was in the wrong because 'she didn't know she was supposed to open it, it's not her fault she fell asleep, everyone makes mistakes~!' I almost had to ask if they were joking. (they weren't)

I have lived through 3am dorm evacuations - yes, more than one - caused by that sort of stupidity. It's not actually that implausible. Some people are really, really dumb.

AYRT - I actually agree with your secret. I think I just don't come across this trope that often in the fiction I consume (I have yet to get into any sort of anime). But yeah, when it's extreme like this, I do agree with you.

It's just, some people take a kind of holier than though, moral stance towards the fact that they cook healthy, well-balanced meals every day. Like, good for them for doing that, but I'm thin, moderately fit, and my cholesterol is well in check, so they can do them and I'll do me. I'll continue attempting to supplement my half-can of sodium-packed seafood chowder with a fuckton of mixed greens straight out of the bag.

Frozen peas are at least as good an “oh god how long has it been since I’ve eaten a green vegetable?” lifesaver than mixed greens. Especially because they keep longer.

Yeah, I used to turn to frozen peas a lot! But now that I have more money than I have freezer space, I turn to mixed greens more often.

Instant ramen packages have instructions, so there's no excuse for that.

Given how many times my dorm was evacuated because someone put microwave popcorn in so long that the room filled with smoke, the only unrealistic part of that is that anyone sided with main girl other than in a “we’re all pissed off, but she’s already crying so give it a rest” sort of way.
