I'm pretty sure the secret said people can write AUs and the OP is fine with that.

You're right--I read the OP as referring only to very AU AUs (EVERYONE'S A VIKING), which it doesn't actually say.

The secret's still unbearably condescending, though.

Re: 107

Why? She said "Please don't take this the wrong way, I think you're allowed to do whatever you want!" like ninety times in the space of the secret. It's not condescending, it's just not something people like to hear, regardless of how true it is.

"please be aware that your Simon and Nia are 100% OOC"

"your wrong interpretation"

That's condescending. OP has an opinion; her opinion is not an inarguable fact. It's like saying "Not to be offensive, but..." and then inevitably continuing to say something offensive. Disclaimers don't negate the content of the secret.

It's not condescending. "You're writing a character OOC" is not condescending. Sometimes you can't write what you want without being a little OOC. That doesn't mean you can't write something good - just that it isn't goign to be completely IC. People need to start dealing with that and get rid of this ridiculous notion that every single pairing, every single scenario that is ever concieved of is absolutely objectively equal.

[identity profile] jaclynhyde.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Passing off your interpretation of the characters as the only possible correct one isn't condescending, but it's awfully irritating. I found the wording itself condescending (the "please be aware" in particular).

There are some pairings where a lot of work is needed to make the characters IC, yes, but I think pretty much anything can be done with some good, well-reasoned character development. This is not what the secret is about. The secret is also not about belittling/downplaying a canon relationship for a non-canon ship, which is probably going to be OOC. If 100% of a character's characterization depends on whether or not they're sleeping with one person, then there's not really that much of a character to work with.

Even the most life-changing relationships don't necessarily last forever, and to say that ever loving/sleeping with anyone else before, or instead of, or after another relationship is by definition OOC is, frankly, ridiculous.

It's not just her interpretation, though, is the thing. The writer of the GL has said that they're soulmates in every possible universe. Ignoring that this defies the concept of an alternate universe, this validates her opinion. That's it, that's all, that's canon. You can still ship them with whoever you like and have a rip-roaring good time and make a really great, compelling and believable fic... but it's just not going to be completely IC because the creator has basically explicitly said what the secret OP has said. And that's okay.

If 100% of a character's characterization depends on whether or not they're sleeping with one person, then there's not really that much of a character to work with.

I disagree that the character are going to be 100% OOC if they're split up, but I think the fact of the matter is that they are going to be less IC than if they were together. That doesn't mean they're going to be horribly written and so badly out of character that no one can suspend disbelief, but the fact remainds that you're taking them OOC if you're contradicting canon and the way that they are in canon.

No, not 100% of characterization depends on whether or not you're sleeping with someone - but if 20% does and you remove that element of their character, you're still only working with 80% IC.

Even the most life-changing relationships don't necessarily last forever, and to say that ever loving/sleeping with anyone else before, or instead of, or after another relationship is by definition OOC is, frankly, ridiculous.

This is true of the real world. This is not true of mecha anime.

[identity profile] foxhoundmantis.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I think we're working with different definitions of OOC, actually. Take a hypothetical slash pairing where one of the creators says "Character A is completely straight." Can A/B be IC? I say absolutely, if one works off the existing characters and their existing dynamic. What you're talking about, I'd call canon-compliant. Slashing character A goes against one canon fact about the character, but that is not the entirety of the character. I'd unhesitatingly call the fic IC if the character otherwise acted just as character A would in canon if the matter of his sexuality was tweaked.

So, basically, my problem's with the "100% OOC" part of the OP, because I think that's defining the characters solely by their relationship.

This is true of the real world. This is not true of mecha anime.
Heh. I wouldn't say that a fic not written in the spirit of the canon necessarily has to be OOC--I've read excellent serious fic about comedies and comic fic about serious shows where I'd call everyone in character. But again, that's my definition of OOC.

And just to make things clear, I'm not saying that somewhat OOC pairings are a bad thing (I love Foe!Yay. I read a lot of this. XD).

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Well, in the case of the slash pairing - it's IC in that you're adhereing to their relationship and it's also OOC in that the character is completely straight. I don't believe that IC and OOC is an either/or situation - it's a spectrum. You can be IC on some things and OOC on other things, and I think most fanfic writers do sacrifice some things for others. I think that's the difference in the definition you're using, but you're bringing in other terms like "canon-compliant" to justify your concept of an IC/OOC dichotomy.

I also think that's the problem with the OP - she's also employing an IC/OOC dichotomy where there doesn't need to be one. Are Simon and Nia less IC for not being in love? Yes. Are they 100% OOC? No, probably not.

Heh. I wouldn't say that a fic not written in the spirit of the canon necessarily has to be OOC
