Edit: I think having Kamina as a woman instead of a man changes some things about the series that I don't think the fandom would be happy with. Kamina still has a strong personality that would carry over, but more masculine traits (like MOAR TITS NAO PLZ) would end up being changed (Kamiko would be proud of her body but not madly driven to see penis) and Kamiko would be slightly more feminized as a result. I dunno if that would fit in with the whole "KAMINA IS THE GAR-EST THING THAT EVER GAR-ED" mentality.

Another problem is that placing beginning-of-the-series-totally-awkward-with-females!Simon with a female!Kamina instead of a male one changes their relationship quite a bit. It's kind of like merging Kamina's role with Yoko's from the first 8 episodes - Kamiko is incredibly supportive and essential to Simon's growth, but she's also a pretty girl that likes to talk to him and is fully comfortable being around him. That's where I think the lynch mobs would start lining up. ^^;

...I've thought about this way too much.

Well, you could get around the last bit by having Kamiko be a sister figure the way Kamina was a brother figure, and have Simon not think of her the way he does other women...but that kind of defeats the purpose of writing Kamiko/Simon. XD

Also, I think it's totally possible that Kamiko could be all about sneaking glances at hot guys' asses the way Kamina is about getting that glimpse of boob. She could even bond with Leeron over it. But yeah, that would probably piss off fandom. XD OMG THAT'S TOO GIRLY FOR KAMINA-SAMA.

(Or, she could be a huge dyke who still loves the tits. That would just make Kamiko/Yoko even better.)

I admit, some of the traits that make Kamina "gar" to most of fandom are the ones that make it difficult for me to like Kamina-as-a-guy, at least until he starts showing his father issues and vulnerability and we learn more about that after his death. He starts reminding me too much of every annoying shouty guy who won't shut up and is obsessed with being macho and awesome and always makes things difficult for the people around him. Flip the genders and she's still annoyingly shouty, insecure, and exasperating, but the perspective is fresher and I find it easier to get interested.

Doing that would probably help it progress more like the actual series does. If Kamiko's female and Yoko isn't interested, there's not really much of a chance for Simon to freak out nearly as much as he does in episode 8. He can do everything just as planned, without Kamiko having to jump on the ship to knock some sense into him. Thymilph might end up going after Simon instead, but Simon would probably take the hit better than Kamina did, and Lagann is harder to pierce than Gurren. (...no pun intended!) Even if Kittan was coming onto Kamiko at that point, I don't think their relationship would have advanced that much to where one or the other would try to encourage kissing. It's a lot easier for Kamiko to survive, but also harder to get Nia into the picture, as the aftermath of Kamina's death puts Simon right where he needs to be to find her. (The next seven days would need more emotional drama and more throwaway bad guys in order to get him there again, so it's not impossible.)

She's certainly a flirt and not very shy about teasing the boys. I can also her with Yoko, Darry, and the Bachikas in episode six when comparing breast sizes, but I think she might also try and force her way over to the other side so that Simon wouldn't be alone. Even if she's a girl, she wouldn't want to leave her partner alone. She's a fun little pervert.

I think the gender switch would open up those insecurities as well. Kamina doesn't talk a lot about his insecurities, because he knows how people perceive him (particularly Simon). People are watching him to see him be that jackass that steals a mecha or yells at Ganmen with just a sword to back up his trash talk, and he knows that people would respond positively to it, and maybe better themselves. Kamiko would do the same things, but she's not so incredibly RAR MACHO. I think her insecurities might show a little bit more, with factors like PMS and seeing her partner hanging out with other girls he could be interested in. There are so many fun differences. XD

I just dunno how to nicely fic them all.
