Other people have said this already, but your significant other (soulmate, true love, whatever you want to call it) doesn't define your personality. It doesn't MATTER if them being together changed them - it is still very possible to write fic that has them not together. In fact, someone could write fic that involved them breaking up (not sure how off the top of my head, but then, I'm not a huge GL fan) and if done right, it could be perfectly in character.

I have a pairing I adore, one that I love so much I can't read a fic if they're paired with other people. That's not how it plays out in my head. That's not how I see them. Doesn't mean any fic like that is automatically OOC, though.

Wouldn’t that fall under the realm of metafiction and personal interpretation? I mean, the OCC-ness if a character is a completely subjective idea. What defines the character, to us as spectators, if not its interactions with other characters?

Metafictional concepts such OOC and IC are indeed personal interpretations... but I would say a character is defined by its interactions with the environment in general rather than just with other characters.

Agreed. Interacting with others is a big part of life, but it's not all.

Lots of things define a character - interactions with characters is a big one, and by that I mean all characters, not just romantic relationships. There's also the ways a character behaves in any given situation, his history, how he chooses to present himself to the world and what he chooses to keep hidden away, and since this is fiction, sometimes we even get to witness the inner working of the character's head. What I object to about that secret is the idea that if the story is to be believable, the two characters must be romantically involved, no exceptions. No one is defined that thoroughly by one other person, no matter how important that person is. I have ships that, due to my interpretation, I think belong together regardless of circumstances. Someone could write them apart or even enamored with others and still have them behave perfectly IC, though. Heck, I consider my boyfriend to be the other half of my soul, but that doesn't mean that if he wasn't around, I wouldn't be me. He may be a huge, seemingly inextricable part of my life, but there's a lot more to me than just that.

OP here. You can indeed write an IC story about Simon without Nia or a story about Nia without Simon... I just don't like when they intend those stories to be romantic. And they're free to write whatever they want, I just think they're OOC.

Fair enough. I get where you're coming from, and of course, you're perfectly free to feel that way. I disagree and think alternate pairings could be written and have them still be in character, but that's just my interpretation, no more or less valid than any other. :)
