Way to totally miss the point. The idea is that if the canon version of this Simon character meets the canon version of this Nia character, they're going to end up together. That is all.

And way to miss MY point. I was making a general observation as an outsider with my personal tastes on the series itself.

Fanfiction in itself is always AU unless you're writing a strict replication of the series itself. If Simon and Nia's characters are so dependent on each other, then yes, it's likely that that if you want to write them apart, many changes are going to be needed. I haven't seen the series, so I don't know what EXTENT these changes must be. But I don't think that it's the end all, be all of ANY canon that x couple must always end up together, no matter how much the canon in question pounds the "true love" or "it's fate" or "this is the point of the entire series" aspect of it. I'm a firm believer that it's possible to break up a canon couple while keeping adherence to the guidelines that canon sets and keep it IC.

I think it's mostly that one of the characters involved, Simon, was extremely introverted. At the end of the show the other character involved, Nia, dies. What does the writer does at that point? He makes him leave the city and everyone in the cast behind, because even if he truly appreciates his friends he doesn't really want to be with them… they're just not his type. Then a time-skip to 20 years later and no-one in the cast knows where he is, he has cut all contact with them. Then again he appears at the end still by himself and the grave of the death character still has fresh flowers in it.

Indeed it could work, but you'll have to make him still think about the girl in question and be an old man.

Simon left Kamina City because he was content with his life, not because he was lonely. Simon was just tired by paperwork and routine.

I actually think the scene that you're referencing shows that Simon is in an incredibly unhealthy psychological state by the end of canon, myself. JUST... SAYIN.

You're contradicting yourself.

What does being in-character have to do with writing an AU? There's no contradiction.

I don't think that's a contradiction, actually? It's possible for something to be AU and still mostly IC except for the necessary changes made. If that weren't true, all AU's would be unrecognizable except for the character names and they'd all suck.
