Okay, there's something to this that I just don't get. Maybe it's because I've never seen the canon, but the attitude in this isn't specific to any canon or couple, as far as I've seen, and I've come across it before.

I get that they're a canon couple. That's great. That's awesome. I get that if something is set in canon, at or after the point where that couple becomes canon, fic ought to acknowledge it, or it because either AU or OOC depending on how it's handled. I also think it's pretty tacky to break up a canon pairing by saying that they never really worked, or bastardizing one or both of the characters involved.

But why is it 100% OOC if they aren't a couple? Is their relationship 100% of their characterization? Is it absolutely impossible that they were a couple, and now they aren't, no matter how perfect they were for each other at one time? Are other pairings so totally and completely unbelievable because clearly having loved someone once, the people involved can never ever move on, not due to death, or character development, or irreconcilable differences (which are not solved by love, unfortunately), or irreconcilable similarities (also not always solved by love) which could lead to other pairings, you know, existing.

I'm not saying you should like them, and I'm not saying you're not entitled to your opinion, and you seem perfectly respectful in general. But I just do not get this attitude. It is possible to love more than one person, deeply and romantically, even life changingly, in one life time.

I think it's mostly that one of the characters involved, Simon, was extremely introverted. At the end of the show the other character involved, Nia, dies. What does the writer does at that point? He makes him leave the city and everyone in the cast behind, because even if he truly appreciates his friends he doesn't really want to be with them… they're just not his type. Then a time-skip to 20 years later and no-one in the cast knows where he is, he has cut all contact with them. Then again he appears at the end still by himself and the grave of the death character still has fresh flowers in it.

...Just reading that made my teeth hurt.

It’s really not “diabetes inducing” or cheesy. He leaves his friends to wander the world and teach children how to protect the Universe from the "Spiral Nemesis" rather than because he can't forget his lover. He is just too content with his life and accomplishments to truly care about romance at that point.

I have rather low tolerance for that kind of sweetness in general, which might be part of the reason for me just not getting this sort of thing. I'll take your word for it that it's not cheesy, but I have a hard time believing that I wouldn't find that saccharine.

Since I suspect that this whole 'Simon is introverted' thing originated from a post I made, I feel that I must say something about this, because it's really starting to irritate me.

Simon being introverted does NOT mean he doesn't want to be with his friends! Introverted =/= antisocial! Simon values his friends and likes hanging out with them! The argument is just that Simon can be just as happy on his own as with other people, and so his being alone at the end does not mean he is depressed! He can still be close to people without having to be see them everyday. That's it.

I believe Simon left because he was tired with paperwork and routine. I don't imagine him staying in Kamina City even if Nia had survived, he would have dragged her with him.

Well... I admit Rossiu's "THOSE WHO LEFT THE GOVERNMENT BECAUSE IT WASN'T THEIR CALLING ARE BETTER THAN YOU BUNCH" probably had something to do with it, too.

I agree. After everything that happened in the 3rd arc, I can't imagine him wanting to stay in politics.

I'm just sick of people talking about introversion when it's clear they don't fully understand it, especially if it originates from something I said and makes the fandom look crazy as a result.

As was made abundantly clear a couple of secrets ago, Nia/Simon doesn't really get my motor running, but the specific point of them together is that they are one another's "great love". The ending itself basically answers your question of "is it possible for them to fall out of love and/or move on?" with a resounding "NOPE, SORRY".

That said, no, it's not "impossible" to write them with someone else and have it be IC. Simon is not defined as "the guy that's in love with Nia" and Nia has her own personality even "fresh out of the box".

Then again, I'm a firm believer in the idea that soulmates are made, not born, so... ::shrugs::

....Riiiiiiiiiight. Well, maybe the fault is less with the OP than it is with the writers then, because I find the idea that it's impossible to move on rather disturbing on it's own.

Still, it doesn't sound impossible to me so much as it would just take a good writer.

To be fair, the show did pretty strongly imply that another character had moved on from her (dead) first love and started falling for someone else.

And Simon is shown fairly content with his life at the end, just not in love with someone else--so it's fairly clear that he has moved on, just not to another person. Which is also possible.

To me those characters are OOC if not written with each other (although I wouldn't go so far as to say "100% OOC"--there are some aspects that could be kept and kept well), but that's me. Everyone has their own definition of just how far they're willing to see a given story deviate from the canon before calling it OOC. If they didn't, you'd only ever need one giant list of fanfic recs.

Yes! This! Simon is able to be still in love with Nia even after she died and also be content with his life. He just has no need to look romance, he is satisfied with the way things are.

I haven't watched the series either, but canonically, they are literally soulmates in every possible alternate universe. So yeah, in this case, I think "They're OOC if not together" is a pretty fair assessment given that little nugget of information.

...Okay. That's fair.

And now I never, ever have to worry about watching this show, because that's creepy.

What's creepy about it, out of curiousity? I think it's amusing, cheesy, and par for the mecha-anime course.

Eh. It's mostly me. It's not necessarily something I expect other people to find creepy anything--I've never really liked the idea of soulmates, or people you're destined to be with, no matter what happens. It just feels... off to me? I guess it's hard to explain.

I don't understand the point of adhering to canon in a show that uses "ROW ROW, FIGHT THE POWER" as its motto, though.

Then that's fine, don't adhere to canon. Just don't complain that someone is being mean to you when they tell you that you're not adhereing to canon and that the characters are kind of OOC.

I never complained. I can see where he is coming from and I respect that.

Thank you. I think so many people are missing this little fact. I don't care if you want to pair them up with other people, but you WILL be making them OOC simply by going against what the writers have stated to be true.
