he's Mr. Sheffield high on X

:chokes, dies: God, yes. I so wasn't expecting MSG2 to beat MGS1 on the cracked out scale ("You play Castlevania," was untoppable, I thought), but it really, really did.

I really enjoy the thoughts! I find it awesome that I'm nodding along to all of this without technically having played the games (watched friends play, watched a shitton of clips, wiki'ed- I'm one of those nerds) because I fucking refuse to play games out of order and I'm holding out for Twin Snakes because I need first person mode aaaaaand I really like Otacon.

[identity profile] vivalanaomi.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
MGS didn't know what crack was before MGS2. MGS2's fourth-wall breakage was actually rather creepy at some points (playing as a completely naked and vulnerable Raiden as the Colonel growls to you in his best Mean Daddy voice, "Turn off the console. Now! Don't worry, it's just a game" is Nightmare Fuel when you're playing at night).

I was actually in your boat until two weeks ago. I didn't want to play the games out of order, and was watching my friends play through MGS4 (I've only seen the beginning) along with watching the series on Youtube. Then I found this compilation (http://www.amazon.com/Metal-Gear-Solid-Collection-Playstation-2/dp/B001383L36/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1225241151&sr=8-1) at the HMV. I really recommend it; it's the first three games for $30, and contains bonus materials.

And Otacon is completely great. I liked him a lot in MGS, but I didn't understand how awesome he gets until I played through MGS2. What's great about Otacon is that his Codec information is actually seriously useful, especially in boss fights.

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Jesus H. W. Christ, yes, that was so creepy. I was all "lol wot, is this for real?". And the random gibberish talking was even weirder. Thank god Snake showed up to save the day soon after.

WAIT WAIT. That compilation is at my local story... does it have the alternate ending for MGS1?

I just love their relationship. :D Otacon is such a fucking nag. You ever start smoking on the Tanker and then call him? He throws a total hissy fit. "WHY ARE YOU SMOKING? CAN'T YOU THINK OF MEOTHER PEOPLE FOR A CHANGE?" "Chillax, Hal, these are the no-second-hand-smoke kind." ":fumes: How are you so THICK!?" Seriously. It's adorable and hilarious.

Spoilers, though if you've been reading you prolly are good and rotten by now...

[identity profile] vivalanaomi.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
You mean if you don't save Meryl? (I'm planning on going through it the second time to get the Otacon ending. I didn't the first time since I actually like Meryl and I didn't really want to have Snake break under torture. But... you know, sometimes things must be sacrificed for 100% completion and the image of Otacon slipping around in the snow like a confused seal as Naomi drones on in the background as if she's reading from Zen and the Art of Evading the Question of Whether or Not You Actually Poisoned a Guy). I imagine it does, because when I saved my game, it was listed as the "Meryl Storyline," meaning that there must exist an "Otacon Storyline" in contrast.

I love their relationship too! That was one of the major reasons I was bummed that the Tanker chapter was so short; the Snake/Otacon banter was adorable and hilarious. Especially Otacon trying to help Snake with his morales.

I think nagging out Snake for smoking is a running gag in the game. Mei Ling, the Colonel, Nastasha (lol irony!) and Naomi (ha ha, more irony!) go on about it in MGS. And it makes sense, since smoking actually literally depletes your health, more so I think when you're Raiden. Because he has baby lungs, I guess.

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
.... :has to pick up the compilation now: I highly rec the Otacon ending. I though it was tres awesome. Also, if you're version lets you pick who breaks you out of the cell, call Otacon. His way of saving you is... really clever, actually. :pinches his cheek:

Yeah. D: It was great while it lasted.. But, hey, getting to see their odd little partnership from Raiden's eyes was interesting too, I thought. Especially when Otacon kind of threatens you so make sure you take care of Snake.

(I want it on the record I did not come into MGS with my slasher glasses on. Kojima is just SO BLATANT. And I heard on TV Tropes that Hayter admitted that in MGS4, part of the direction the voice actors were given was to play it like a romantic relationship. JUST SAYIN.)

Raiden is such a newbie. I hear he gets a Crowning Moment of Awesome in MGS4 though, which is cool. Rock on, Raiden. You'd be so much better without those hips tho. D:

[identity profile] vivalanaomi.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I've seen the Otacon ending on youtube, but not how the game deals with Meryl's absence, so that part will be interest as well. And I didn't know there were any other way of getting out of that prison cell without Otacon coming to save your ass XD

And yeah, the slash is there. Especially in MGS2. I don't *ship* characters, het or slash, because I find that I honestly don't care who the characters end up with. I mean, I can enjoy fan fiction, but I find that I'm more interested in dialogue and characterization, of which romance is sometimes a part. But... yeah, MGS is kinda gay in many different ways. And that's not even counting the canon gay provided with Revolver Ocelot, Vamp, Raikov, etc.

Also so far it has also had some of the most badass and complex female characters in gaming, so that also gets my attention. Like Fortune's Crowning Moment of Awesome which made up for her not having any pants. I'm just starting MGS3 (the game I am the least spoiled for so shhh XD), so I expect more awesome shortly).

Oh Raiden. He actually is a good example of a dynamic character who changes and grows, so I get ridiculously happy when he makes good. Also, his sword is the my favorite weapon in the game.

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I think you can call someone else besides Otacon. I'm fairly certain Otacon's not the main way to go, actually... :puzzles:

I can totally respect that. :thumbs up:

OH GOD. Fortune. >.> I was ridiculously in love with her character, and not just she was the hottest set of pixels on the PS2 (I am so very shallow). So awesome, wish MGS2 had more of her, tho Vamp was pretty cool too. :D

MGS4 alone is making me regret my decision to go 360 Christmas. On one hand.... BioShock! On the other... MGS4! Ah well. Hindsight's 20/20.

Re: Spoilers, though if you've been reading you prolly are good and rotten by now...

[identity profile] vivalanaomi.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
I think the Colonel told me to call Otacon. I do remember there was a whole lotta talking in that jail cell, though. Because that's what characters do on the Codec. It doesn't matter if Snake is making his way through frikkin' lasers or is shirtless in a jail cell (which was probably Liquid's idea), Nastasha is gonna want to talk about how nukes are bad, just in case you missed that the Cold War happened, and Miller's going to be kinda creepy to the extent that the twist is so obvious that you can't believe you missed that this was a Date Movie and he's this close to take off his ponytail and glasses and because the Queen of the Prom, and Mei Ling is going to be adorable and say really obvious stuff in completely complicated ways. That's what MGS is all about.

To be clearer, I love reading fan fiction with all sorts of different pairings and I do read Snake/Otacon, but I usually don't care about which characters end up together in canon. Though any Snake and Otacon interaction is Win because they are amazing.

I actually at first disliked Fortune, mostly because she was wearing a bathing suit and was just being so self-pitying in a way that I felt was like the poor man's Sniper Wolf. However, then I realized that the game actually subverted the Tragic Anti-Heroine model, and Fortune was actually one badass mother- shut yo mouth.

Ah, Vamp. I really think he's well-done, creepy, and cool, but unfortunately, vampires are my pet peeve. Yeah, I know. Random, since they're not real. Plus he killed E.E.! Dick move, Nosferatu. Dick move.

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
The reviewer Yahtzee did once say that Hideo Kojima is in dire need of an editor equipped with waders and pruning shears. :D

:nods: I get that. I don't personally understand people who are pulling for their pairings to become canon or anything (though some things, like the Hayter bit, are nice). We are fandom! Canon is no object to us! \o/

Well, no one will ever beat Sniper Wolf. That bitch was hardcore. I wanted her to pwn Snake's ass. But Fortune rocked too.

Oh god. If I could change one thing about MGS's canon, it'd be E.E.'s death. For one- really sad! I kinda liked her! And for two- HOLY BUCKET OF ANGST, OTACON. How Hal continues to function as a mostly-sane human being escapes me. Also, someone told me once that after hearing just how fucked up Otacon was, they always assumed Kojima hated otaku and this was his way of kicking them around. If I didn't think Otacon was a bit of a creator's proxy, I'd totally agree.

[identity profile] vivalanaomi.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Ha, no wonder I like the games. Just look at my posts!

Can I go off on another tangent here? Ok, so I guess you're spoiled for MGS2. I have a total theory that is probably not a theory so much as a reading between the lines: Hal's father was trying to drown E.E. when that incident happened. Maybe he was trying to commit suicide as well, but a six year old who just happened to be dragged along? No, I think he was trying to drown her in revenge for what Julia did to Hal. And Hal and E.E. are in serious denial that their family is more effed up than they first thought.

And that's saying something. Liquid has a less effed family-construct.

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Saaaaaame. Yahtzee was all "rawr, too many words" and I was all "BUT I LIKE WURDS :D :D :D"

Oh, I totally agree. I figured that was how the gamer was supposed to piece it together the whole time. Now that I think about it, Hal's dad was kind of a bastard. :( Poor Emmerich kids. And lol, now Hal's a dad. I hope he does a better job than his folks did. Can't see how he couldn't, though. The bar is pretty low.

Lols, if I remember the scene in MGS2 right, Dave was there too, yes? I wonder if he was all, "shit, man, and I thought my past was screwed up."

[identity profile] vivalanaomi.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Complaining about MGS having too many words is like complaining about Mario games having too many sewer pipes. I mean, that's what the series has been like since MGS. It's partly an interactive movie, but I think it might even be closer to describe it as an interactive novel. And while the gameplay is great, Kojima gives the player the option of making the game so easy it's basically a stroll between cutscenes.

I also find Hal's dad's suicide-by-pool rather suspicious too. Although it's easy to accidentally drown, intentionally killing yourself in a pool is actually rather hard compared to the other ways you could go. Your body would automatically start going up for air, unless you weighted yourself down. But now I'm not really reading between lines and am instead planing an Epileptic Tree.

Could it be... murder?

I loved Snake in that scene. He seemed actually very sympathetic and awkward about how much Otacon was hurting... but still was keeping it together to finish the mission.
