I really disagree with most "conventional wisdom". The first one to come to mind is "you regret the things you didn't do more than the things you did" although I know there are others.

I can think of a few things I did that I really regret, but there's nothing I regret NOT doing. I'm sure there are people that DO regret things they didn't do, but to act like it applies to everyone annoys me.

Also common phrases/sayings, like "living at home" to mean "living with your parents". Like, no. I'm a grown adult and my parents' home is not my home anymore...it's my parents' home, I have my own home now.

I'm genuinely shocked by this. Like, my entire life is things I regret not doing? I regret not applying myself more in school. I regret never learning a sport. I regret not sticking with a gym regimen ten years ago. I regret not writing a book. I regret not learning how to cook better. I regret not learning how to drive when someone in my life still owned a car. I regret that I didn't do ten minutes of stretches every night for most of my life. I regret not learning a second language. I regret not trying harder to put myself out there and making friends. I regret that even now I'm sitting here doing fuck all rather than doing any of those things I'll still be regretting not doing in another twenty years.

You seriously don't have any of these sorts of "I regret not doing it" regrets?

Not really? All the things you listed are either things that I did do or things that I don't really care that I haven't done them. I mean, if I think about it, I'm sure I can come up with some small things that I should have done that I didn't, but the things that have affected my life the most are things I DID do that I definitely should not have.

Also, I guess it depends on how you frame it? For example, for some of yours, you could say "I regret slacking off/being lazy in school" or "I regret giving up my gym regimen" or "I regret that I stayed home all that time instead of going out and meeting new friends" or whatever.

IDK...sorry if this doesn't make any sense, I'm sleep deprived and not sure if my brain is working right lol.

You could frame it this way, but I think fundamentally you'd still be regretting a lack of action. It's like saying, "I regret that thing I did where I didn't do the thing."

Interestingly, I have very few regrets over things I've done. Like...small stuff, sure. Saying something stupid and embarrassing that one time or that other time, or wasting a hundred dollars on something dumb. But that's about it. Guess we're opposites lol. :)

But you could also say you regretted doing the thing you did instead of doing the thing you should have done! :P

Any things I didn't do are so minor that I honestly can't think of them right now, it's the things I did do that I regret. My #1 regret is going out with my ex because I was too ashamed of my sexuality and felt the need to be "normal". But I guess you could also frame that as saying I regret not breaking up with him (and instead waiting for him to break up with me, because he was unable to convert me to his church of all things, apparently not catching onto the fact that I didn't like men). Everything else is things I did because of peer pressure/seeking approval/trying to fit in, but again you could frame that as I regret not being confident in who I was and standing up for myself. It just depends on how you want to look at it, I guess (and again, I don't know if that even makes sense).

But yeah, it sounds like we're opposites lol. It's interesting how different people can interpret/experience things so differently.

yeah, that last one always bugged me too, doesn't everybody live at home unless they're homeless?

Yep! It's one of those things that I think people just say without thinking of what it actually means, but because I have a tendency to overanalzye everything, it annoys me lol.
