Agreed, Anon. I may be a little bummed at a really *bad* adaptation, because that makes it harder for me to lure people to experience the much better source material.

But...yeah. It's just another AU, and the source still lives, so yay!

That's quite a nice and stress-free way of looking at it to be honest.

Agreed.

I think for me the real issue is if the adaptation is going to be the be-all-end-all. For instance, with LOTR, when are we likely to see another version of that? And it wouldn't be so bad but that the movie version has permeated culture. I mean, for example, when was the last time there was new art of brown-haired Legolas? More personally, I'm always sad when I read a fic or meta that takes it as given that Elrond is an asshole. It's hard to be in the book fandom and get away from the movie!fanon. I wouldn't hate it if it was easy to separate them.

However, if you take something like Pride and Prejudice, I'm more than happy to see widely different adaptations. There's already a fairly faithful adaptation in the BBC version, and if a new one is one I don't like, there's bound to be another one in a few years. It's easier not to let a bad adaptation get under your skin because there's so many of them, and it's unlikely that any one is going to come up if you're in a fandom for the book.

I find that this is true in general. Austen, Les Mis, King Arthur, Robin Hood, some comic properties like Spider-Man and Batman - they all get reboots and reimaginings often enough that any one doesn't stick as THE ONE, and it's easier to enjoy them for what they are. But if a movie or show is the one shot a book has, it can be a real letdown if it's bad.

Being a Batman fan is pretty sweet in regards to adaptations - so many of them, in different media, going back decades, varying wildly in tone, and if you didn't like the latest one just wait a few years... Sherlock Holmes is another good example of that. Maybe also Dracula/vampires in general.

I like the MCU, but I never read the comics so I had no opinions on what the characters should be like. It's got to suck if you're a Marvel fan who doesn't like the MCU since we're not getting different versions of those characters for a good long while.

Yeah, I think this is why being a comics fan is an important part of my attitude there - there isn't just one version, ever, not even in the same medium. It must be harder when there's only two main versions.

Excellent summation, you've expressed how I feel, too.

i wish cultural recognition worked as logically but it doesn't, and its annoying to have a bad adaption color the understanding of the source.

True.

Yeah, if the one adaptation is bad, it's not going to bring new fans to the table, people won't be more likely to pick up the book (or whatever) because they assume it's dumb, and it might make existing fans embarrassed to admit they are fans because saying so is now less likely to make people ask "Oh, what's that?" and more likely to just make them think of the bad adaptation.

I somewhat agree. I just don't like when adaptations affect the original, which happens often with comics. I'm actually the OP of secret 3.

I like weird bad adaptions like batnipples batman, but I hate edgy dark "THis is real cinema" bad adaptations.

I love the "Sometimes it's dire!" OP, that's fantastic.

But yeah, overall, I agree. The Percy Jackson adaptations are a sin against nature (they're dire, even), but other than that, bad adaptations don't upset me much.
