a lot of kamen rider and super sentai don't considered it, I think it's connected to a feeling of fandom elitism (my fandom is sooo much better than your fandom or your show is for children and my isn't)

I guess technically, like "anime" and "manga," tokusatsu applies to Japanese-language entertainment?

but most of the footage, at least the battle footage, as well as the concept itself IS Japanese...some US company splicing original footage together with new scenes of American actors is about the same as "localizing" anime dubs by changing onigiri to donuts. It's still Japanese at the base level.

now if they'd filmed an entirely new show from scratch but using only the framework of "there's five color coded ninja kids" and nothing else, much like Voltron, then that's different.

Yeah, fair enough.

(To me it doesn't matter what something's called, as long as it's entertaining, but some purists want to die on hills of terminology, I guess.)
