I feel you, OP. But, while there ARE a lot of one-dimensional, poorly written female characters in mainstream published fiction, there are also a lot of good ones, too. It's a shame how many of the bad ones make it through to publication, though. I do forgive some of the Mary Sue-type stuff, though, especially in genres like fantasy and sci-fi because the male version is kind of ubiquitous there, too, and I think it's just part of the regular tropes of those genres.

I agree with you, anon, although I did manage to watch all of Torchwood. The first season was OK, but yeah, basically every character was unlikable. I also feel like a lot of the plots were dark just for the sake of being dark. And Jack in Torchwood was completely different from his appearances on Dr. Who... although they did explain that as, you know, a couple more centuries of life and terrible experiences shaping the Torchwood version.
