I feel like if you put something on the internet, you can't get mad when people criticize it because that's just the way things are.

If you post fic, there are going to be people who don't like it and will say something.

If you post pictures of yourself, there are going to be people who call you ugly and criticize your appearance (no matter how conventionally attractive you are, there's going to be SOMEONE who's going to say something awful).

Maybe it's not right and people should be nicer, but it's just reality. If you don't want your stuff criticized, don't put it online.

This.

Constructive criticism is fine
But I'm sick to death of trolls on the internet. Why should we always hand things over to them?
In polite society it is considered rude to criticise people's appearance or work so why are we giving it a pass on the internet?
To me 'it's the internet' isn't a good enough reason any more, because too many of these assholes are getting away with being trolls and are actively stopping people from enjoying the internet.
I don't know what the solution is, maybe more moderation is needed.
But it just bugs me when people say 'it's just reality'. Actually, it isn't.

IDK, I feel like this is naive because there's just not a realistic way to stop them. I'm not saying "it's the internet so it's okay", I'm just pointing out that it's going to happen. Yes, it's rude, but you're never going to stop people from being assholes. You say it's NOT reality, but it is. You may not like it, but it is. There are always going to be jerks in the world. Would it be nice to make everyone always be nice to each other? Yes, of course, but it's not going to happen.

On the one hand, there’s a lot of things people have every right to do. For instance, people have every right to criticize the shit you make public, whether you asked for criticism or not.

On the other hand, just because you have the right to do something, doesn’t mean you’re not being a dick for doing it.

As an older fan, I tend to feel like fandom has maybe swung a little too far to the “ecstatic praise only” side of things for my liking. That said, I still fundamentally agree with the (currently very popular) argument that we’re all here for fun and we’re not being paid, so if someone isn’t interested in “improving their art” or whatever, that’s totally fine, and when they request no concrit, the polite thing to do is to not give them concrit.

Speaking from personal experience, when I’m playing pool badly, and four different dudes take it upon themselves to teach me how to play better, all I want to do is tell them to go away. I’m playing for fun. I’m not interested in improving. Kay, thanks, bye. Some people are like that with their writing, and as far as I’m concerned, good for them.

Oh, I totally agree that they're being a dick, I just always expect people to be dicks. Maybe I'm just pessimistic but I always assume that if there's an opportunity for something to go wrong/be negative/people to be dicks, it's going to happen and there's not much I can do about it so I need to just expect it (and try to base my actions on making it happen as little as possible).

If it's someone who specifies they do not want or need any criticism, they are just having fun, it's just reality that you are an asshat if you leave criticism just because it's online.
