Mama Rose wasn't just "misstepping", it was being devotedly, single-mindedly, and viciously devoted to living out her dreams vicariously through her children. To the detriment of herself and everyone around her, she was willfully ignorant to everything else, from the fact that vaudeville was dead to the wants and needs of her actual children.

She's a tragic character, alright. Tragically self-centered.
